To be fair. The Godfather (the movie) is universally near the top of the greatest films of all times lists. The book does make many best of lists.

Because there aren't that many movies. Books have been around for thousands of years. There is more competition to be the best book than the best movie.

Shawshank Redemption, even though I liked the book a lot.

I think I liked Fight Club the book better than the movie. Same with American Psycho, though I really liked that movie.

I've read the book at least 4 times and I'm smh. It's not even close imo. I think even Palahniuk basically said the movie was better. And I really liked the book.

Fair point. Limit to 20th century lists if you like, my general point is still the same. The Godfather (the movie) is iconic - one of the best of its art form ever. The book is good, but not in the same rarified air as the movie relatively speaking.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree, but I don't think the poster who nominated The Godfather in this thread is way off base.

Mario Puzo is a relatively mediocre writer. For those defending the book, have you ever read it or any of Mario Puzo's other stuff? It's wretched.

I read Omerta, and it wasn't all that good.

I loved the book. Haven't read his other stuff.

ETA: I don't understand how The Godfather the book can be wretched when the movie follows the book.

That's interesting. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is considered to be a classic.

It did. It talked about Don Corleone's beginnings.

I was a film major in college, the Godfather is the only perfect movie I've ever seen. I enjoy the book, but the movie is light years better.

The Godfather

WTF

The Godfather and Godfather II are 2 of the greatest movies ever made, the book is a decent pulp novel.

Hah, I'm not that pedantic or stereotypical. I used to frick with people at school by saying that Arnold should have gotten a Best Actor nominee for Terminator 2. I actually kind of believe that, by the way.
