It's duck hunting in the sea, and it does give you access to some ducks that you won't get hunting near land. I think scoters and eiders are examples of ducks that you can only really get somewhat out in sea (you might be able to get them in a bay). It's in the middle of the water without much of a blind for cover...it's a very odd way of hunting.

Sounds fun though. Good luck.

Are decoys used? Or just try to find them.

Sounds very interesting. Never heard of that.

I've watched a bunch on tv. They fly pretty low on the water and are fast fast. Most of the shots seem to be passing shots so you better have a quick shoulder for sure. That's gonna be a blast though and you'll shoot some unusual but beautiful birds out there. Keep us posted with pics and good luck.

This is only what I've heard about it and seen on photos. I'll verify tomorrow, but apparently decoys are used...but they put them out in a straight line...it's very odd. Like us normal hunters would put them either in a scattered array or at most would but them in a J-hook or V shape. They literally put them in a straight line in rows of 5 to 10. They can be in a rectangle or "v" shape. Very odd. From the sound of it, I think they are able to achieve this because the sea ducks don't get a lot of pressure and they're basically dumb as shite.

The decoy spreads are pretty unusual. They basically line them up in straight lines an the birds just fly right over them parallel with the deeks. So they basically use the decoys as a line to tell the ducks where to go.

It's just slightly worrisome though when the guide tells you that it's normal for hunters to shoot 3-4 boxes per hunter...in other words, your duck per shot number is not very high.

What is a sea duck?

Or is it just duck hunting on the sea.

Just ducks on the sea. We do it here, but shoot from land most of the time. Mainly surf scoters, harlequins, eiders and goldeneye.
