exactly right.
and if it turns out he's gay and does the boo hoo i couldn't tell b/c i'm a football player- i hope like hell the l/g community slaps him in the face. there's having a beard and then there's killing off a fake girlfriend and gaining (attention and sympathy) from the story. so in my opinion even if he is gay- he's still crazy and crazy is crazy regardless of sexual orientation.
