"Gay" explains it all.
No real girlfriend for 4 years at Notre Dame (one story indicated they met in 2009 when he was a freshman). If he has been telling that story for a while, it could be to keep his teammates from suspecting.
Killing off the fictitious girlfriend keeps anyone from asking why this Heisman candidate doesn't have one and also makes the topic of a current girlfriend off limits.

It's much more plausible that he dated a girl he never met who only had one picture, wasn't on Facebook, never skyped, didnt meet him at her Stanford when they played but he said she did, and the true scammers helped him get over her death by calling him and pretending to be her sister and brother, and he never looked for her obit, then found out about it and continued for 5 weeks to talk about her.

I heard on SVP earlier that ND expected Te'o to break the story on Monday. He obviously did not. Deadspin breaks it on Wednesday and now everybody is caught up in it.
