How much does the quality of your golf ball matter?

At what point does the "quality" of your golf ball matter. When does it come into play the most often? For backspin? Off the tee box? Never?

unless you shoot below 80 it doesnt really matter, they are all round

I do firmly believe that some of the upper end balls hurt a 20+ handicapper.

When you get to where you are good enough to shoot close to par and can see the differences in the way golf balls behave. Not a problem for me.

Absolutely. Those balls not only spin backwards with wedges, they also spin more sideways. If you can't hit it straight off the tee consistently, you shouldn't be playing a high end ball.
To answer the OP, the biggest difference to me is the feel. If I hit a low end ball like a Top Flite, it feels like a rock coming off my club face.

Agree. They exaggerate your slice for one thing.

I am awful so anything that is considered a golf ball will work for me

i have come to the realization that I suck, and there is no need to buy a case of any of the top end name brands.

So a novice would want a low spin ball?
Posted on 1/14/13 at 4:16 pm to barry
I don't want a high end ball. But I will gravitate toward a softer feeling ball.

For example?

Its the indian not the arrow...at higher swing speeds (like mine)it makes a bit of difference because certain balls spin more and whether you have a high spin rate with your swing or not will make you choose a different ball...but its a marginal thing for most amateurs (like me)

It matters but not nearly as much as other factors.

3 piece ball is softer than the cheapos, 5 piece is top of line

I hit Pro-V1x for stoppage on the greens.
If I'm using cheaper balls, it'll release too much for me.

Post a video of your swing.

It depends and it doesn't depend.
What I mean by that is as a high handicapper, one may either not notice the difference or don't care. What people are saying in here about having to shoot 80 or par for it to make any difference isn't necessarily true. If you are adamant about your game, you are gonna try to shave strokes wherever possible. You may still slice, but that ball that's close to OB may have stayed in...
To answer your question directly, it affects spin rate, compression (sometimes), ball flight and direction, and sometimes distance. Whether it is the core that has water damage, or the profile of the ball being unbalanced, or even scratches and gouges on the surface, all have an impact, and in different ways.
The harder the ball, the farther it goes an the less it spins. The softer the ball, the shorter it will fly and the more it will spin. Everything is dependent on something else, but it does directly have an impact.
