Which one do you guys feel is more important in today's NFL? Obviously we have always heard that D wins championships, but is that true anymore?

Both win about an equal amount of the time.

I think you can compensate for both. Steelers and Packers are recent examples of both. Offense seems to rule in the NFL right now

Balance wins. Even if you skew one way you really need to be at least top 10ish, or above average, on the other side of the ball.

In the NFL Offense wins games, the defense wins the Super Bowl. I don't mean the defense will do enough to get you there and win, I mean that WHEN it's played the defense wins it for you.

NFL: Elite QB. Colts went 2-14 a year after Manning left. Denver is 13-3 now.

College: Defense and running game. don't need elite QB or elite WR. control the LOS.

It used to be D but the league has manipulated the rules so much in favor of the O it's now you win with QB&D

If you have an elite QB,a quality o-line,and a defense that can create turnovers, you can beat anybody.

We hear this a lot. That it is a QB league now and an offense driven league. But the numbers just don't jive with what seems like an obvious transition in the NFL. From a thread awhile back:

LINK:

Defense wins championships:

(total offense)/(total defense/scoring defense)

Great D:
_(9) / (5/_2) 2010 Green Bay
(22) / (1/_1) 2008 Steelers
(16) / (7/17) 2007 Giants
(15) / (4/_3) 2005 Steelers
(17) / (7/_1) 2003 Patriots
(24) / (1/_1) 2002 Buccaneers
(19) / (8/_6) 2001 Patriots
(16) / (2/_1) 2000 Ravens

More O than D:

_(8) / (27/25) 2011 Giants
_(1) / (25/20) 2009 Saints
_(3) / (21/23) 2006 Colts
_(7) / (_9/_3) 2004 Patriots <- just a great team on both sides of the ball

User Error:
(19) / (8/6) 2001 Patriots, how did they win it all? User error. They had a solid D.

edit: update

You need an elite QB with an at least ok defense, or at least an ok QB with a dominant defense.

I think it depends one team. Obviously offense rules the nfl in this era but I still believe defense is capable of winning championships. It's a qb driven league if you are the defensive team you're not gonna win without shutdown corners and a great pass rush. Either way elite qb's rule the league and win championships.

Great offense and forcing turnovers (saints/green bay sb years) or decent o/no turnovers and great d (ravens)

I think the defense wins championship montra is still alive and well. Just look at the Saints. They've been setting offensive records for nearly 7 years but only have one championship Bc of how poorly the defense has played.

An elite QB and a defense that forces turnovers is the new formula to win in the NFL.
