i had a topo map laminated and divided it into thirds. 1st stop was always at the bottom of the large rapids just past rushes landing. great fishing right here. it would probably be easy if you could get a gps map of the river.

If you put in at Ponca make sure you go see the Elk. If you drive HWY 43 heading south from Ponca you will see them in the fields in the mornings and evenings. (They aren't in the fields much during the summer)

The very tiny Rebel crawfish crankbait was the ticket when I went. Smallies killed that thing and nothing else we threw.

Me and some friends went in 2011. During the spring is good. More rain the better.

I took my own kayak but found it is alot easier to call Gordons Hotel and rent theirs. Then you dont have to worry about dropping a truck off at the pickup site and then going back to the drop off site and getting the one you left. Just call Gordons and they do everything for you. I wont ever take one with me again.

We stayed at a camp site called the Blue Hole. It isnt on any of the maps and green jeans says ony the locals know about it. We found it on accident. Also three teenagers tried to swim across the river and get to the cave(in the pics) on the other side. Two made it and one drowned. He drowned the day we got there and they found his body 4 days later on the day we were leaving. He was only two hundred yards down river and had got hung under water in a downed tree.

We were on the water for three days. The first day ended at our campsite. The second day started at our campsite and Gordons picked us up that afternoon. The third day they dropped us off and then picked us up that afternoon. We took a 12 pack of beer each, sandwiches, smokes, small tackle box and two ultralights a piece. Thats really all we needed. After a 12 pack it gets harder to stay in your boat when going through the rapids. The last day I thought I was going to drown because I was a little too drunk to be paddling through rapids.

Big Piney

Home of "The Mother." When we first started canoeing in solo open boats, we ran it in Feb. Got hypothermia even with a wetsuit. When we got to the takeout, it was 19deg. Day started out in the 60s. Really thought we were going to die the last few miles in the dark. We were running our boats into one another and giggling like school girls. I remember water droplets freezing on my paddle every time I lifted it out of the water. Good times. I think the Buffalo is more scenic though. Also, look into the Eleven Points. Beautiful river and less crowded than either of the other two.

Order a large pizza or two and put it in the ice chest. Cold pizza is way better than cold sandwiches....

"How many days would that be?"

About 3 days easy, 2 nights. Much more fun and much better scenery than the lower section. I've done it all many times.

I've done the Big Piney once and the Buffalo many times. I think the Buffalo is one of the prettiest places east of the Rockies.

A buddy has gone a couple times. They canoe for 3-4 nights at a stretch and love it. So much that he's getting married up there.
