I wish my friends would want to do this.

I was in the same situation a few years ago. Wanted to start kayaking and doing trips and none of my friends wanted to. Once you buy a boat and get out on the water you meet lots of new people. Now I've got 4 kayaks in the back yard and 40-45 new friends that I paddle and do races with. I do the races for the fun of it and the experience, not the trophy.

I canoed the Buffalo three times during Spring Break while in college. Awesome trip. We floated 5 days, 4 nights from Ponca to Gilbert.

We had 4 of us. Packed a whole ribeye for dinner for the first two nights. Protein is good.

Caught and ate Smallies the other two nights.

Check out this site.

for the past 2 years we have went at the end of September out to Wild Bill's outfitters near Yellville which is upper river. Water levels range anywhere from 1 ft to over 10+ ft in this section. To me this is the best time to go because the temp outside is in the high 70's during the day. As you can see in the second pic, it is low, but floatable. If you float from Dillard's Ferry (Hwy 14) to Rush, you want to make sure you don't miss Rush, because the next place to get out is like 20 miles away

We go about 6-7 times a year. Drive up to Waynesboro, TN, and camp at the Crazy Horse Canoe Rental site.

It's a blast.

I forgot to add, it was WAY colder up there than here at the time. We brought too much beer, not enough clothes, not enough Wolf chili and not enough waterproof packs.

One night, the Blair Witch rustled the bushes for a few hours. I never slept.

We use to go the first weekend every april. Been in everything from snow to heat. We always drove up thursday night and put in friday morning and they would pick us up on sunday afternoon. Its a blast. One year it was starting to rain the first day when we put in and it flooded all day. Huge rapids the rest of the trip. Saw several canoes in our group get doubled over around trees and we would have to tie a rope on one side and get several guys on the bank to pull it free. We poor boyed it and used old pickle buckets for dry boxes. You can stack them like logs in the middle with your gear in them and run a rope through the handles so you wouldnt lose anything if you flipped. There is a 90 ft cliff we would pass and when the water was high enough we could jump off of it. Just a blast man, def make this happen. When I think of the town we use to go to where we rented our canoes I will post it but I cant think of it now for anything.

ETA: Jasper is where we went and used a service there to rent canoes, drop us off and pick us up. We would just call them on the last day and let them know about where we were and they would tell us where to stop that afternoon.

Thinking about making a trip like this for Mardi Gras (Feb 8-12) What would be the best river to go down if I were trying to get into some good trout fishing? Would it be too cold this time of year to even consider it?

It will def be cold and with all the rain were getting chances are it will be very fast. That means it will be hard to stay dry. After getting cold rain and even snow the first weekend in April, I wouldnt go back before then. I like fast water though and rapids so I dont like going much after that either.
