The guy (not my dad) who taught me all I know about the outdoors recently passed away and it got me to thinking.....
My dad was an alcoholic and never really taught me anything about the outdoors. When I was in my early 20s and already married, I decided I wanted to start hunting and fishing but didn't have any idea what I was doing. I actually asked a man in my church if he would teach me so that I would be able to teach my son one day. I was really embarrassed to ask him because it didnt seem very manly but I didnt know how else to learn. He was in his early 40s and we hunted and fished together for the next 20 years.
I am now 45 years old. The guy who taught me recently died from cancer and it has made me reflect..... My 11 year old son and I LOVE to hunt and fish together thanks to my friend. He gave me an awesome gift that I now share with my son. I now look for the opportunity to teach about the outdoors to son and his friends who are growing up with single moms or even to young men like me who just never had the chance to learn.
Sorry for the mushy part of this but I was blessed to have some make a difference in my life through the outdoors. My friend changed my life....my son's life....and generations to come.
Just want to encourage you guys to use your love of outdoors to make a difference for someone. I am glad that someone did it for me!!!!!!

Sorry for the loss of your friend. I'm sure he's proud of the way you are raising your son.

You only get one of those in a lifetime.
Glad your son gets to learn from his dad. That's something you can never replace.

Have always thought spending time with your kids outdoors creates a special bond.

Great to hear about a good friendship. And now your son will be able to enjoy the rewards of his kindness

Very cool story, I would also add that you should teach people that didn't grow up being the outdoors and stewardship and conservation practices.

X1000 my father had a similar situation - my grandpa passed away when my dad was 12 and an uncle and family friend helped raise my dad and teach him how to hunt and fish. I am the direct beneficiary of that. Hunting and fishing is like a tribe we have to share our knowledge - pass it down/pay it fwd

Sorry to hear about your friend. All we can do is pay it forward once someone passes. Good to see you kept the tradition going.

Wish you lived further south. I really need an OB bromance for hunting. Dad taught me fishing but nothing about hunting. Sorry to hear about your friend.

Great story. I can relate. I owe my buddy's dad a lot for taking time to teach me what I know. He didn't have to but I will always be grateful that he did. I would encourage anyone who loves the outdoors and has a son, make sure you include any friend of his in a similar situation when they get around the age of 12-16. It is the easiest and most enjoyable way to make a huge impact on someone's life.
