Never tried at RC but at French Market bistro, I had a $100 GC, wife and I ate for $80 I put the GC in the folder and was walking out and the waiter caught me to give me the GC back with $20 on it, I told him it was for the tip and he said they could not do that, I talked to the MGR and he said the only thing they could do is let the waiter keep the remaining balance on the GC and use it himself, or wait till someone paid for their dinner with cash and swap it out then. I told them that was ridiculous and was just a ploy to get the customer back in the restaurant to use the balance of the card
I would be interested to hear what someone in the business has to say about this. Is the sale recorded when the gift card is purchased, or when it is redeemed? Do you pay the taxes when you purchase the card?
As far as tipping goes, I have recently started tipping with cash. I zero out the tipline on the invoice, and leave some in the folder. Am I helping the server? Am I screwing the bartender? What say the food service folks of the board?

Very much helping them by doing this. I try to do this most of the time too.

That's what it sounds like. I just got a $200 gift card to Uchi, curious to see if I can tip on it.

quote:Yep. I do it when I have enough cash. The waiter doesn't have to wait until payday and the tax man gets screwed. I support both of those.

I always tip on my card when I pay with the card.
Why? Because I pay taxes, and they should too.

They will pay taxes. It's automatic. They just will not pay quite as much.
I generally do the cash tip thing more often if it is someone I know. Especially true at my regular bar hangout.

No.

As do I, for several reasons. The restaurant pays a fee on credit card tips and will sometimes pass that fee down to the server. The server also pays taxes on the tip which can significantly reduce take home pay(save the I pay taxes, so should they argument). It's the servers responsibility to claim taxes, so they very well may end up claiming the cash tip, but I leave it up to them and reduce the credit card expenses for everybody involved.

Was the gc plastic or hand written?

Did we ever get an answer on this?

He never insinuated he would stiff the waiter during this outing. He asked a question then was bashed for something
Actually he said he'd never tip more than $30 for 2 people because that would be quote "cray cray"
If he actually tipped $30, that's great! If that's the max he's willing to tip no matter what the server does or how much he orders, that's sucky considering that's the only money coming out of pocket.
And unless you're blind, I didn't bash anyone nor did I say anything rude to this dude. He made it very obvious through his posts that he's likely young and doesn't eat meals like Ruth's often. I told him the SAME thing I tell my brother when he goes to dinners like that since he also doesn't do it often.
Sorry this board doesn't serve the purpose you'd like because people give young dudes advice on tipping, but I sure as shite ain't coming in here recommending my roommate (who serves at Ruth's) to someone who sets a tip limit before he walks in the door.

I don't know..
At Dempseys people can't tip on gift cards and that's 100% because of the computer system. There's no place on the system to input a tip on a gift card.
As for whether to tip with cash or card, that also depends on where you are. When I worked at Dempseys, you get all tips that night. Even credit card tips come straight out the register.
At Ruth's, credit card tips are put in your paycheck. My roommate for some reason prefers CC tips that make her check bigger. Maybe she thinks she'll spend the cash too easily..

No offense, but that sounds like a crock of shite, to me. I can't imagine there's not a place in "the system" to just key something in as a miscellaneous purchase, and then cash out the amount to the waitron.
