re: How do you feel about the defense now?

I'm also optimistic and feel they've shown flashes. I've said the defense is a joke right now, but we also don't have a head coach or linebackers coach/asst coach. No telling how much Spags is having to do on his own.
That said, didn't they avg about 25 pts or so giving up with Williams? If our goal is 25 ppg given up, God help us. Because that is awful.

With the BYEd getting some guys rest and healthy I think the defense will be up for the task of taking down Freeman and the Bucs. I still have faith in this team to pull through and make the playoffs especially with Brees under center. They will need a lot of luck and for key players to stay healthy.

Corey White isn't that bad
How so? He gets beaten by his man every single snap. He doesn't know what area to defend sometimes, gets the incorrect play call and marks a zone letting his man run free when he shouldn't. The completion percentage against him is much too high.
Sure he could have potential, but he as of this moment isn't good enough. It is costing the Saints out there on the field. We have seen Patrick show some flashes on the field, and we know he is healthy enough to play. So why is White getting more snaps than Patrick? I just don't want to make the excuse he's young and will improve, if he currently is a humongous liability out there.

I feel like we are trying to move from a defense with the potential to be dominant once the offense has provided a nice lead (i.e., once opposing offenses are forced to become one-dimensional). Spags is trying to turn the corner to a well-rounded defense that might be able to win games in its own right.
It just takes time to break the players from their old habits (gambling for the hard hit instead of proper tackling). Spags will have a well-deserved long leash with the Saints. I think his scheme will eventually prove itself as it has in other programs.

I don't know, last week there were people saying that the Saints haven't shown any reason to think they will win a game this year. Those people were just being realistic, not homers. So I am going to go with them. We won't win any games.

Yeah that is another issue with Jenkins, not only is he slow covering space and in getting up the field in run support, he misses a ton of tackles. I think he missed 4 alone in the Chargers game.

But but he is 3rd in the NFL for tackles among DBs, that must mean he can tackle

I'm willing to give Spags the year to get things worked out. The players have had to learn a new scheme so it takes a while to get positioning, assignments and angles nailed down.
That said, he already seems to be getting some things turned around. I love the pressure we got in the 4th quarter last week with our down 4-that looked like signature Spags. But we're still getting torched on the edges with the run and too often the DB's are near the ball but not making plays. Still work to do, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

My next biggest question is in regards to White and how/why he beat out Patrick for the nickel spot (who has been moved up to #2 when Greer has been out.) I thought Patrick showed flashes in the preseason of being a solid nickel guy who won't get picked on. I know he was injured but he's been back on the field mostly in special teams. I can't imagine White is outperforming him to that degree

I think I hate Malcolm Jenkins more than I ever could hate Roman Harper.
Jenkins needs to maintain discipline in his assignments. He seriously needs to stop jumping routes & leaving areas of the field open when he is responsible for that territory. Its almost becoming a weekly occurrence with him. If he starts doing so, the interception opportunities will come as QB's may try to force some throws in tight windows. Jenkins catching those passes is another story though. He also needs to start wrapping up better on tackles instead of going for the kill shot all the time.

The problem with Jenkins is that he's a CB. He isn't a big hitter. When he does try to tackle, he does this weird dive with no arms extended and throw your back into the guy move that always ends up in him getting smoked.
Most of the defensive line trouble is personnel. Will Smith is not good. Sed Ellis is not good. These two seemingly have just dissolved away into nonfactors.
You can pretty much bet money that Ellis will end up 5 yards backward off the line and Will Smith will do this thing he always does where the bum rushes, throws his arm up like he's being held, and won't sniff the QB. Y'all know the move.
The LB's can hardly be blamed for the lack of a defensive line. Same for the corners. However, they aren't getting jams at the line, either, and Jenkins is playing the pass about as poorly as ever. Harper is having a solid year, but he's more feared as LB/blitz type player and I like the combo of him at nickel LB and Quddus at safety.

A lot of our problems is just Harper and Jenkins getting out of position or getting crossed up. Theoretically this can be fixed. But I'm doubting the intelligence of these guys. We need some smarter players.

They have to stop the run a lot. I wouldn't be in position as much either on receivers if i had to constantly be worrying about someone breaking a 20 yard run every hand off.

I was being sarcastic towards the "realistic fans". You know, you aren't being realistic if you have positive thoughts only the doom and gloom are being realistic.
I saw positives in our defense in the green bay game. I was talking with a friend of mine, who usually shares my positive outlook, and he couldn't see anything positive about the defense.
I'm not saying that we are going to win the rest of the games. But as long as our defense is at least competitive we do have a shot.

just for reference, defenses last year...
NFL avg pts allowed 22.2
Saints were 13th allowing 21.2
the difference from last year's Saints to #3 Ravens defense is 4.6 pts per game. That's parity at it's finest. 5pts a game is diff from avg to elite scoring D.
2011 Yards Allowed Defense
NFL avg 346.8 per game
Saints 24th 368.4
elite level would be 3 teams under 308 per game
-5 pts & -60 yds per game and yer close to total domination

Jenkins isn't setting the world on fire, but the SD game was not indicative of his abilities.
Its been more then just the San Diego game with Jenkins. He got burned in both of the first two games for big plays as well because he tried to read the QB's eyes & jump a route. Instead he's given huge plays to opposing offenses. Remember him trying to jump a route by Steve Smith & giving up a long pass because of it?
Both of Meachem's TD's were do to bad plays by Jenkins. On the first, Corey White was expecting Jenkins to cover his area of the field towards the inside & squeeze Meachem's route more. Jenkins was late squeezing the route & then turned completely the wrong way allowing a window for Rivers to drop the pass into.
One the second TD, Jenkins flat out jumped the route like he was expecting a quick slat or curl & left no safety help over the top for White who was expecting Jenkins to be in position.

I think Galette and Wilsons progression under Spags tutelage will go a very long way in determining whether we go pass rusher with our first pick this year. If they develop enough, id like to take someone like Star Litueli (sp?) to make Ellis expendable. If not, I wouldn't mind grabbing another corner since our depth there always seems to be tested year after year. I think Robinson will be a very good one with more progression, but Greer is getting older and I sure don't want White as our consistent #2.
Another reason I really liked when Harper dropped to LB and Quddus came in and the SS

Jenkins isn't a corner either. He doesn't possess the speed or change of direction to be a solid corner. Malcolm is more of a strong safety then free safety & could possibily be a good one if he learns how to tackle.
