Here's a good thread on that theory.

I do think it will be hard for non readers to understand who Lyanna and Rheagar are. And probably wouldn't have much shock value considering how little they've been talked about on the show
Everyone in Westeros would take interest in the world's most famous prude's love child.

Is it possible that John Snow is Robert's son? My mistake I meant Cersi. I was watching season 1 ep 2 and Cersi told Cat she lost her first born son to the plague.
Nope and nope.
There would be no reason to hide the identity of Jon's mother if she was Cersi (or some fishwife or a Dayne). The only reason to hide Joh's parentage would be if he was a Targ.
It's a classic fantasy trope and John's story arch makes sense for a character that is destined to sit the throne.

Speaking of Lyanna, what do you guys think is buried in her crypt? Rhaegar's harp? Targ wedding cloak? Torrhen's crown?
Torrhen's crown would be really awesome. That would be a nice touch.
If I had to guess, I'd go with dragon egg. It's too late in the story to raise a dragon, but the egg would be significant proof of Jon's parents.

I watched a movie last night, Ironclad, that some of y'all might like. It is based on the baronial revolt. As a student of history, little is accurate, but if you like GoT you might like it.
It stars Paul Giamatti,Kate Mara, Brian Cox,& James Purefoy. Medieval knights & weapons, holding the keep, broken vows etc. The actors that play Tywin Lannister and Orell are in it.

But cersei wouldn't know Jon snow is her son. Cersei's child with Robert is varied from the books to the show. In the show she says he was bundled up and taken away from her. In the books she says he was aborted.
I don't believe this theory at all. I just wonder if the show will go a different direction from the books here simply because the average show watcher doesn't know much about L + R as they are rarely mentioned.
They would have to show a lot of back story to bring the show watchers up to speed which is possible. But if they just come out and say L + R= Snow then most show watchers will be lost

If R+L=J is true and the show deviates from this, then they will no longer be the same story. Jon being the offspring of Lyanna and Rhaegar appears to be setting up as the whole point of the story. I just can't see the show doing something completely different. I expect there to be a lot more telling of the backstory with Lyanna in the coming seasons. It's kind of the opposite of how they handled the white walkers (in the show and book for that matter).
- On one hand, you show the white walkers early to get people interested, even if they won't really play a part until later in the series.
- On the other hand, you don't tell the backstory of a thing that will be revealed at the end of the show most likely. As cool as it would be to look back and say "Damn, they brought that up early in season one", most Hodors would see these stories and wonder what the frick is the point.

The thing is that theory seems to be thought of by a Hodor. Which shouldn't be even be mentioned. If the show ends up going a different direction it could end up alienating long time fans. The show is what got me into the novels and I'm about to run into my one year name day of being familiar with either one but I don't know if I would be happy if they changed it up after following the material as close as it does. I know they're on different levels but that one thing that is enjoyable about TWD. It follows it's material very loosely. I'm update on those and I never know what's going to happen in an episode.

Jon descends upon Winterfell with a wildling army after receiving reinforcements from the Cranogmen with Howland Reed at the head. He tells Jon that he should go to the crypts to pay respect to his father. Jon hesitates, wrought with grief. He goes to sleep beneath the walls of Winterfell that evening. He has a vision of Ned walking around the crypts. He goes down there to reconcile why he is having these thoughts and something compels him to open Lyanna's crypts. Next to her bones, is a small bundle and two parchments. The first is from Ned, it states:
Dearest Jon,
I have raised and loved you as my own but my honor has forced me to write these words and I must now betray an oath that I made so many years ago. If you are reading this you have spoken to Howland Reed and the truth must be told. You are a man now and I have done my best to teach you the ways of honor, loyalty and family. And it is the last that brings me to these words, as you know Jon you are of my blood, but you are not my son. Your mother was the lady Lyanna, my sister. You were born of a secret love that caused the collapse of a kingdom and the deaths of so many but from that chaos came a precious gift, you. As Lyanna lay dying in child birth I made a vow to her on her death bed that I would raise you as my own. To do that I had to make the world believe that you were bastard born. You were made to live with this mark and for that I am sorry. The lie was vital Jon because the truth would not just cost you your life but the lives of all we love and hold dear. If your true lineage would have come forth King Robert would have had you killed and I would have lost the last part of my dear sister. Your true name is Jon Targaryen, you are the true born son of Rhaegar Targaryen. The proof of your birthright and lineage are within this crypt. It was love and honor that bound this oath, Jon, the same love I bear for you and my sister. I hope that you can forgive me for this falsehood but know this, falsehood or not, you are as much Stark as you are Targaryen. If the day should come that you are called upon to take up your birthright and lead, do so in keeping with the ways of the North for you are as much wolf as you are dragon.
Your uncle, Lord Eddard Stark, Lord of Wintefell and Warden of the North.
Jon stands motionless in shock of all that he has read and then looks to the other parchment containing a royal edict from Rhaegar Targaryen stating that the child born of his and Lyanna's marriage is his and trueborn. The document was signed by Rhaegar and later witnessed by Lord Commander Gerold Hightower, Ser Oswell Whent, and Sir Arther Dayne, the Morningstar after the birth of Jon who was named for the old King of Winter. Jon then turns to the bundle and there inside is a dragon egg, dark blue in color, like a winter rose.

No I'd rather click on here and read about people bitching about GRRM not writing. I mean it is a theory thread after all.
Anyway I don't believe in that theory at all but it is interesting to think about.
I personally don't know what I think regarding Jon snows parents. I know L + R= J seems most likely but some part of me thinks maybe it's too obvious. One thing this series is known for and a reason it's so popular is it's unpredictability

I like that version a lot.

Mother of God. Did you write that or pull it from someone else, because that was pretty damn great.

Well the link to the theory you posted said that it came from a Hodor. That's why I said it shouldn't be mentioned. Also I don't bitch about the guy. I know he'll get it done because he's a professional. Also just because it seems so obvious doesn't mean that it's not the truth. If you've read The Millennium Trilogy then you might understand what I'm saying, but I figured out most of its twist and mysteries a third of the way through and it's mostly because it was obvious. Sometimes the obvious is there to make you overthink and second guess yourself so you're always on your toes.

Of course I wrote it, I'm at work what the hell else am I gonna do?

So what happened at the Tower of Joy, the Kings guard committed suicide?

We only know that Ned found Lyanna dying. She could have given birth and been slowly hemorrhaging. Ned fights the three and goes up to find Lyanna and a baby.

Although I will say that I have thought about that quite a bit. The Kingsguard, knowing that it's the the only way to save the last heir, allow themselves to be cut down to protect the secret. It would be pretty riveting stuff.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking. But then how does Howland reed "save" Ned? It was his idea?
Posted on 1/8/14 at 3:20 pm to Sid in Lakeshore
Maybe Howland was the only one to get everyone to stop and see reason. He was the one that got them all to understand that they all had the same goal, to save Jon.

That made me tear up .
Well done.
I think that finding out Jon's parentage is going to be an emotional moment for readers. No doubt I'll be emotionally affected by the confirmation of R+L=J. Especially if there's a letter written by Ned. I wonder if they'd use Sean Bean's voice to read it?

When I was writing it, I was imagining Sean Bean reading it with them showing some kind of flashback. I just have to think there is some way for Ned to tell Jon either through visions, Weirwood network, ghosts?, something,
