I think we are having this discussion because no one has stood out, when in fact all 4 or 5 of the guys have the talent to stand out.
Is it a good thing, or a bad thing? 2012 will tell.
Remember, "standing out" is always relative. One guy can "stand out" because he is among munchkins, while another can stand just as tall and be lost in a crowd if he's surrounded by giants.
Put another way, if you have 5 Trent Richardson's on a team, none of them will be "good enough" to stand out. But you've still got one hell of a sweet RB situation.
*NOTE* That was just an example, a hypothetical; I was *NOT* suggesting that we have 5 Trent Richardson's on our team this year.

quote:Just for the record, Max, if the roles reverse and Hilliard gets the majority of early game carries and Ware gets the later game carries, and Hilliard's ypc drop to about 4 or so and Ware's jump up to about 5.5-6, would you even consider the possibility then that you might possibly, conceivably have been wrong and that maybe the disparity in ypc last year had more to do with roles than with talent/performance?
We should have Hilliard as the feature guy, Ford the speed back, Blue in his same role, and Ware getting a few short yardage carries and being the 3rd down back with his great hands.

quote:Just curious how you think you can know that? How would the situation look different to the fans if all 4 or 5 of them were greats? Trent Richardson, Marcus Lattimore, Knile Davis, Mark Ingram, etc., all were bottled up or limited by some teams and had games where they struggled along the way. What would their careers have looked like if their teams' had had 3 or 4 other guys about as good to turn to? Would they look a bit more like Ware? Or Blue? In 2009, on a National Championship team, Richardson had a ypc of 5.2. Last year we had three different backs (Ford, Blue and Hilliard) who all exceeded that.
There is a committee approach because there is no great standout there.
I just think it is a tremendous mistake to compare stats from one situation to another without regard to the circumstances and draw conclusions like that.

Maybe ford is in the doghouse again like he was in 2010? I don't care for ware getting the majority because he seems to get the ball and immediately put his head down.
Hilliard I think is the best out of the bunch, with blue, Magee, and hill right beside him.

I think we are going to see Hilliard emerge as the "every down" guy that bangs the early. We will spell him often with Ford/Blue as a change of pace, going more and more with who has the hot hand. Once Hilliard tires after long drives and in the second half we will see Ware come in and beat people up for short yardage and goaline situations

Well I consider Hilliard the best overall back we have seen play. He can catch and block, very powerful(see him run through guys twice for TDs against the #3 defense in SECCG), and has quick feet for an RB of his size. Like Earl said, if he were to drop a little weight(really doesn't need too at all) there would be no debate and he'd be the feature back.
See Miles likes a big power back which is why Ridley, Scott, and Hester got the ball much more compared to others. I think he(Hilliard seperates from the back with 15-18 carries a game. We'll pass the ball about 25-30 times a game and run it about 40-45 times a game.
Blue is my second pick, I do believe he is more of a homerun threat than Ford but I could see Miles just pounding the shite outta teams with Hilliard and Ware.

I don't care which two and doubt Miles does much either. What matters is that two step up.

Lacy is way overrated! He flunked out of Lsu on the SAT, but I see Saban said he would be fine at Bama? We shall see soon.

I agree that Coach Miles is sending a message to all the RBs. That being said, I can well remember Bear Bryant and Alabama winning a lot of championships by keeping a fresh pair of legs in the game at all times. I'm just shocked that Miles can keep this many quality running backs available at LSU this consistently. Kudos to Miles for that.
I work with Michael Ford's Mom. She says that he is totally pumped up and can't wait until Aug 1 gets here. He texts her all the time, but mentioned after this date, texts will slow down considerably. Looking for a GREAT year!!! Geaux Tigers!

I'm hoping for Hill and Hilliard, personally.
Umm those 2 are gonna be goaline type backs.
We have 4 good backs. I think Hill gets redshirted but I might be wrong.

We have a solid and deep group of running backs but non have emerged from the pack or shown to be considered elite as of yet. Ware and Ford have shown to be very good backs but Hillard and Blue seemed to be steping a head of them towards the end of last season and I expect that to continue. I think Blue is the most complete packpage of all our RB's with good speed, power, balance, and vision. Looking forward to seeing what Hill and Magee can do also.

I keep thinking about this thread.
Miles is actually setting up a competition for the rest of the summer practices.

Miles will play all of them just like he did last year!

I hope Hill gets redshirted, but I think I am in the minority on that one.
