Coaches who talk about "doing it the right way" are like politicians who talk about ethics. Take it with a grain of salt.

I think Paterno is scum but it is awfully convenient to come out with a report that puts all the blame on a dead guy

It's funny that someone like John Wooden is considered to be some sort of saint while Bob Knight was vilified.

I have good friends who went Penn State...great school and town. They all just feel kind of numb and sick right now. One of my friends played for JoPa...he loved the guy, but did think from about 8 yrs ago on, that the old man should have been forced to resign. We will never know what was going on in JoPa's mind, but he grew up in the depression, was from a different era, never fired a coach, etc. PSU has great people, who will work hard to comfort folks and rebuild the reputation of a great research school... people there had no idea about this until we all did.

And I have to say that what I've seen posted here is some of the biggest hypocritical, pot calling the kettle black nonsense I've seen in a long time. Plenty of PSU students and alumni have some strange fascination with JoePa and I agree that it can be strange, but have you ever been to the Tiger Rant or LSU campus grounds on game day? It's no less cult like than some of the crazy attachment people have with JoePa. Anyone that says otherwise is delusional and probably part of the LSU cult.
:deflect....deflect....deflect:
If this thing happened at LSU, I'd want every person involved to be imprisoned for life and LSU would get all of the negativity that comes with it.
I believe with everything in me that LSU nor Miles would allow this to happen and you could never convince me otherwise.

lsugrrrl wrote an absolutely superb analysis in this thread last night that i'll use in a short form....
the difference between LSU and Penn State is that the Penn State identity was wrapped around Joe Paterno...LSU has its cultism, but it's a cultism wrapped around the football program and state identity NOT a person...
for all Baton Rouge's faults, it's NOT a hick town located in the middle of nowhere and insulated from the rest of the world...for better or worse, it's the state capital with all the oversight that having politicians around has...
...and along with the state capital, there are major petrochemical plants so the community is not totally dependent on LSU for employment...

After reading posts from people not using anonymous handles this morning, I can safely say that as an alumni of PSU, not only does the statue need to come down, but most references to JoePa as well. His name is an infection on the university, and until it's cleansed, the school will not heal and this festering sore will just get worse.
I believe people thinking JoePa simply "made a mistake" didn't read the Freeh report or they can't accept that JoePa ignored children being molested. The man was a great coach, but this is so much bigger than football. I'm saddened that it's come to this but football also needs about a two year break.
I won't change my thinking from yesterday because I believe it to be accurate, but after reading several comments this morning from real names, it's clear that removing JoePa from PSU needs to happen.

Removing the joepa statue and removing his name from different places is pretty much just sweeping this under a rug. If that is all that gets done, the psu fans & alumni will still talk about how great a coach joe pa was and the other great things he did. You take away football from them for a year and i bet their opinions change drastically. His legacy has already been destroyed in most most places, but the death penalty is the only way to destroy his legacy in the minds of penn st fans. When this many high up people in the athletic department & university are involved in something as bad as this the death penalty is deserved.

Before all this shite hit the fan, the consensus by many, if not most, here was that JoPa was senile, crapped on himself, and was not even coherent enough to coach a high school football team. He was, in essence, said to be just a figurehead.
So, can someone explain how this senile old man who could not wipe his own arse and on the verge of full blown dementia (as noted by the masses here) is first in the line of responsibility being Sandusky.
I see this hipocrisy from both sides. PSU fans said he was still in control until the end (football-wise), other said the opposite.
I thought he was just racking up wins in 2011. In 2001, he was a lot more sane, in 1998 there is no poor old man excuse.

We Tiger fans feel for what is taking place in Happy Valley and hope that the wounds are able to heal sooner than later. PSU is good for College Football..........
Hate that this happened to anyone, much less PSU.
