Nicki Minaj makes better music than any composer ever did.

Because the mindless masses prefer Justin Bieber and Co.

Because philistines drive the LMFAOs and GaGas to flourish.

As a semi-serious answer, I'd say people like Jack White are filling that roll now. Music evolves, and not many people want to hear classical music anymore, but that "spirit" can still be alive in other genres.

Ludovico Einaudi is fairly popular.

Because classical was the pop music of their day. Had those old-timey Eurotrashers known about the rad shite we rock today they woulda kicked those dudes outta Bavaria. Or Salzburg or wherever.

I'm sure you can come up with the real answer to your own question. But here are some pretty famous contemporary(ish) composers
Leonard Bernstein
Gershwins
Aaron Copeland
John Cage
Phillip Glass
Ennio Morricone

I know who John Williams is. he is associated with being a great movie score composer by the mainstream---not a great music guy on its own merits. you think of star wars when you think of him.

The money back then was in that sort've thing.
Nowadays, the mainstream music is pop. Composers now are mainly producers.
Look up Brian Transeau & see what the guy's capable of. Classicaly trained pianist but also has done some SERIOUSLY heavy research and academic study on music theory, etc.
He works mainly in EDM, but he's produced all the crap you complain about today. His stuff that he does on his own though? Pretty amazing...
A few albums back he hired digital artists to have the tracks accompanied with movies and digital shorts. Then he recorded the whole thing in 5.1 so you could watch/listen/experience the album as a surround sound experience at your home in HD.
He's so smart he's almost too smart for most folks. He makes his bones producing for the pop stars, though.
In my opinion, that's where they're at these days. JMO.
