Petroleum Engineering starting salary out of LSU?

I'm 22 and have been out of school for 3 years, I went back last semester to a community college to raise grades so i could major in petroleum engineering at
LSU. I have a few years left, but what I'm wondering is how much do these guys make out of school?

Not an engineer but I think it depends on your grades what kind of internships you can get, which ultimately leads to what kind of job you can get. The floor is probably 50-60.

I had read 83k back in 09, but statistics have a way of not telling the whole story if you know what I mean.

There was a thread on the OT about this a few months back. I'm pretty sure the average was 70kish.

Finished in ME but work in the oilfield, my best guess is a 3.5+ could land a $90k-$110k offer for an operator with an office job. If below a 3.0, gonna be more of a struggle finding a job and likely working 21 days a month offshore for ~$80k.
Again, no hard data just my feeling from working in the industry.

the field is very competitive from what I understand
I was civil engineering
But I've heard that you will need a 3.5 to get an interview with the better companies
If you plan to do it, you better dedicate yourself to havin a stellar gpa

That's unfortunate. I jacked around my freshman year and ended up with a 1.7 ... I brought it up to a 2.6 but still, I would need to make a 3.5 here on out to finish with a 3.3... I didn't even assume GPA mattered all that much in engineering.

Not to hijack but what can a Civil guy expect to make right out of college? I have 3 semesters left and I will have a 3.0/3.1. Im thinking between 45k-55k but I havent seen any real numbers.

Similar question--what is the difference between Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering? Are they really similar with Petro being a subset of Chem?

From what I've read you're spot on, but seeing as you have a good GPA and you went to a better than average school you'd likely be in the higher range of that average. There's a lot of variables of course, that's just my guess.
Chemical engineering seems harder than Pete. They have similarities, but I'm not exactly sure you could classify it as a subset of chem.

Could that be because PETE deals with hydrocarbons while CHEM deals with non-hydrocarbons (and wouldn't there be way more of the latter)?

You're probably a little low
I started a few years ago towards the top of that range
It will somewhat depend on the economy and the type of civil you go for, I'm in the structural sector

In Houston I'd say around 55k average.

Chemical- processing, refining hydrocarbons
Petroleum- finding and getting hydrocarbons out of the ground

My sister graduated in ChemE recently. Works for Exxon in petroleum/drilling making six figures, but she's an anomaly. She had a 3.6 GPA at graduation and multiple internships, so she got placed on a drilling rotation with convenience pay.
That said, most of her classmates were in the $60k-$80k range. The industry matters, and the company. Regardless of how high you can get your GPA, definitely do internships.
Also someone here asked about the difference in ChemE and Petroleum. Petroleum is a little more specific--so if you graduate in that you can do a drilling job, but if you graduate in ChemE you're qualified to do both Chem and Petroleum engineering. That's what my sister's doing.

I graduated with a 2.01 overall (2.8 in CE, won't discuss the other 120 hours I have )
I got one offer for $50k, and another for $60k. Passed the FE on the first try though, something only 6 people in my class did.
ETA: I graduated last December, so these numbers are recent.

Hey Croaka, I'm working for a structural eng and was thinking of taking the SE test next spring, have you taken it yet or plan on taking it? Just curious since you said you've been out of school a few years.
Sorry to OP for hijacking your thread
