I was really excited to come have a late lunch at Luke today. My parents and I arrived at 2:40. There were many tables available, but we were told that we would have to wait 5 mins. because there was a shift change and they were changing to the dinner menu from brunch. We waited 5 mins and I thought 2:45 was a weird time to change to a dinner menu, but that didn't bother me because I like many items on the menu. I finally asked if we were going to have to wait to be seated at 3:00 and she said no. She didn't want to seat us because we wouldn't get the proper service because there was only one server. I saw many servers! I've waited tables in my life(10 years) and I was baffled! She finally sat us because she could see I was getting irritated and she made sure she sat us at the worst table next to a swinging door. We got our menus and they were the brunch menus and brunch ended at 4:00. Maybe the hostess was still trippin' from the night before. Waiter was fine, food was great.

Sounds like they wanted to make sure you got excellent service and a focused server. Food was great, and so was service, I'd consider that a Win.

Doesn't sound like a big deal to me when eating a late meal with no reservations and having someone trying to ensure that you got proper service at an odd time of the day.

Don't be a dick. It's better to get good service with a wait than to get shithole service because they just wanted to seat everyone.

My restaurant unfortunately has NO hostess (it's a seat yourself policy) and often times one server's section will clear and people will go sit at all of their tables. Because we don't have a hostess to space the seating out over 5-10 minute intervals, they get shitty service because a server is double and triple-sat. You have no idea how much of a difference those 5 minutes can make between tables. Getting tables at the same time is very difficult because everyone needs the same thing at the same time.

Believe it or not, businesses have policies for a reason and believe me the last thing they want is a bunch of tards standing around the door in the way. They would have seated you if they could, but they are not going to overwhelm their coworkers OR disappoint their customers if they can avoid it.

Did your whole party order water with lots of extra lemons?
Doesn't sound like this is really alot to complain about.
Glad the food was good.

I don't mean any offense here, but not everyone is familiar with the inner workings of restaurants. Was is really necessary to infer the OP was a dick/tard?

From my experience, I've never worked in restaurant service and also have never understood why even though there are plenty of open tables and waiters/waitresses, there is also a line for a table. I appreciate your explanation. Just saying that not all of us have your restaurant experience.

generally if you go to a restaurant between 2-4 you will not get the same quality of food or service.

A lot of places close during this time as well.

Don't be such a sensitive sally. It's a message board. Knowing the inner workings is one thing; being completely rude every time you don't understand the way a business works is another. I hate people who feel the need to get angry over stupid shite. If I let half the things that people get mad about at restaurants bother me, I'd never have a pleasant meal.

I just wish instead of complaining about things like that, people would stop and use their brain to think about WHY it's happening. Like I said, do you really think a restaurant wants people standing around not making them money?

* I am a bit bitter because I saw the rudest customer of my life treat a coworker horribly yesterday simply because she took over the table when their server's shift ended. Mixed with the people you see day in and day out, it just gets old. I've had people complain literally screaming at me because a table that got there after them got their food before them.. when the table ordered salads and mine ordered grilled chicken with various sides (something that takes a long time). It gets old when people are rude about it.

This and the fact that you mentioned there were many tables available indicates you arrived during a slow period and shift change according to the hostess. Servers you saw were probably finishing up and new ones coming on at 3. Whatever. Still doesn't seem worthy of complaint or acting irritable to me.

I wouldn't write a Dear John Besh letter about it or title my post that way, especially since he probably doesn't read this board.

ouch.

Have you eaten out with my mother in law.

FIL is a huge tipper, but the waitstaff doesnt know that at the outset. And damn the extra lemons talk just will not end.

Dude, I get that it's a rough job (and I also know you're not a dude, it's just a vague generality)and that a lot of people out there are total dicks. I work for the state and deal with what feels like ALL of them on a daily basis. I was just pointing out that not all of us are aware of the inner workings of the restaurant business and sometimes when waiting for a table, these things are questioned.

Internet message boards are often where us "sensitive sallys" learn these things.

Oh I know (: And I am not hating on people questioning it. Sometimes just think they should question kindly rather than scream

I ate there as well today. Arrived a few minutes before 3, was promptly seated. Food and service were both good, as usual.

I've often thought that as well. Nothing is more embarrassing to me than going to a restaurant with a jackass that treats the staff as though they're something to be scaped off their shoe. I have a supervisor like that and I have a list of creative excuses to avoid lunch with her lol.
