You people don't get it at all. This creep's life isn't over, this is the best thing that ever happened to him, same for Updyke. He will be a local hero, give autographs, maybe a car dealership. In Alabama what be did isn't a crime, it's the stuff legends are made from.

Same thing happened when LSU fans were harrassing an elderly wheelchaired visiting Auburn fan dying of cancer in the early 2000s at Tiger Stadium. And the LSU mob that broke out windows on the Tennessee team bus.

All I heard happened to the Tennessee bus was rocking and cussing, juvenile, but it has happened to me on buses visiting several schools, BDS and VT included. Didn't really upset me that much. I never heard that rocks were throw or windows busted, if we're talking about the post-Katrina Monday night game. I didn't see anyone ask for the autographs of the finger-flippers.

Please provide a link to some kind of official report on the above mentioned incidents, I hear about a lot of LSU atrocities and the only one I have ever seen substantiated was the Auburn car with the tiger tail that was burned here a few years ago. That, along with the infamous Ga. fan in the portalet, seem to be some sort of myth.

I am not saying LSU fans always behave like angels, I know better than that, but we don't turn the idiots into heroes, Bama does. I would not be surprised at all if Downing doesn't become the Grand Marshall of the Phoenix City 4th of July parade.

There is a principle of reaping and sowing that always is true: We sow multitudes of seeds, one way or the other, in time (no pun intended here, folks). A man named Esau sold his birthright and could NEVER regain it, though he sought it carefully with tears. When we reach a fork in the road, it is nigh impossible to return and take the other fork if we find ourself on the wrong one. What we don't care about when we are young are things that extremely bother us when we are old. Thank God there is a Higher Power, we can be forgiven, and have a peace enabling us to live above the past. As embarassing as the actions depicted in the video may be, there is grace for both. If only LSU and Bama fans could forgive and learn to live with grace!

Best post in this thread. The story of Esau and Jacob is incredibly sobering. That story always gives me pause and causes me to check my own foolish pride and arrogance when coming down hard on easy targets like the teabagger and even more serious crimes like Casey Anthony, etc, etc. I would say this for anyone. Everyone would be wise to resist the temptation of thinking any one of us is above doing something equally as illegal or negatively life altering as the perpetrator of this crime. It may not be as disgusting an act as this guy pulled but none of us is above doing something really stupid or getting caught up in terrible circumstances beyond our control that put us in a dangerous position. We don't do it but we'd all be wise to say "there but for the grace of God go I".

The hair on my neck stands up when I hear the story of Esau. Jacob have I loved, Esau have I hated (Romans 9). Scary passages.

That's the thing though. This guy and Updyke aren't "being turned into heroes by Bama". I honestly can't find a single Bama fans that I know that has anything other than pure contempt for Harvey Updyke. Most Bama fans that I know want him in jail so we can be rid of him. A lot of fans are sick and tired of seeing idiots take pictures with him as if he is some kind of celebrity. Our problem is that we have a vocal, active UNCONTROLABLE %5 of the fanbase that lose all perspective when it comes to Alabama football. As much as you guys want to convince everyone that these people are heroes to Alabama fans the truth is they aren't. Updyke and this guy no more respresent the overall Alabama fanbase than the 2 Saints shooters in Applebee's represent Saints fans or New Orleanians.

By the crime rate in NO, they might represent the Saints fan base. Your nut case rate is a lot higher than you are willing to admit.

Well besides the guys lining up on Bourbon for a picture with him and those who provide him tickets to the games, donated to his defense fund.

That's just it. There are tons of pictures of people swarming Updyke in public, and shaking his hand and kissing his arse. And 98% are wearing Bama logo'd gear.

I'm very disappointed somebody didn;t jump him in the French Quarter.

This.

The amount of Gumps defending it, (it was just a prank, he's lucky that is all that happened to him, etc.) is just baffling. I think the number of people who were disgusted with JJ after Shadys is an indicator that we don't even put our players on such a high pedestal, much less our shithead fans.

Some supported JJ from the beginning, sure, but the majority were supporting Lee through the end of the year and in no small part because general consensus was, regardless of what all went down that night, Jefferson made some REALLY bad decisions and didn't represent LSU the way we want to be represented.

There are a lot of great Bama fans, but there are a lot of Gumps that give y'all a terrible name. STOP videotaping it, STOP calling into Finebaum bragging about it and STOP deifying these nuts by making them local celebrities.

Hence my 5% comment. 5% of 3,000,000 fans is a lot potential Harvey Updykes. On the other hand, that leaves the rest of us. The 2,850,000 Alabama fans who are no different than any other fan of any other fanbase. I can't deny we have some maybe even many nutcase fans but as usual the true scope of these fans is blown way out of proportion.

I've seen the pictures of those fans getting pictures with Updyke and all I can say is it's pathetic. It's kind of a Catch 22 though. When Alabama fans speak out against the "sidewalk" fans in our fanbase we're accused of being elitist a-holes. No win situation.

I agree totally but this just goes back to my original point. People tend to hear what they want to hear. If you want to hear the 90% of Alabama fans who are embarrassed by this fan's behavior and condemn it or do you want to focus on the 5 or 10% of Alabama fans that think it's no big deal?

Any jackleg can post a youtube video or upload photos to the internet (i.e. pictures of fans with Updyke). It only takes a small number of fans to do these things which can paint a broad brush. It all boils down to what people want to believe from their prejudices. Look at the way many of us look at people from the Middle East after 9/11. Probably less than .001 believes or supports what those terrorist did but in many ways they are all looked at poorly by Americans. The same principle applies with Updyke and teabagger and broadbrushing the entire Alabama fanbase. People want to be offended in situations where they are prejudiced against someone. All of andouille's posts are a perfect illustration of this. He has such a seething hatred for all things Alabama that he even trashes James Beard Award finalist restaurants located in Alabama simply because he ties everything in the state with his hatred of Alabama.

I've seen the pictures with Updyke and I counted MAYBE a dozen or so people. AGAIN, out of 3,000,000 fans you are going to have several thousand screwed up fans. And for the record, why do I keep getting accused of defending or excusing Updyke or the teabagger?

I agree with Govt Tide's point, but Bama's 5-10% has some of the biggest shitbags in all of fandom. Their bad fans are fantastically bad, like WVU was on a smaller scale.
