are you trying to compare the two games? you can't. Seattle game was a disgrace. We played well against SF until the last 4-6 minutes. Again, we got beat by a better team on Saturday. I cant hold that against the D regardless of my diappointment.

that's more accurate. SF is not the better team. 5 turnovers and having to win on the last legitimate play of the game is evidence of that. This game is also evidence of the importance of defense (as are the Giants and Ravens games), which is an area that MUST be improved.

yes you can and must. when the games were on the line, the defense crumbled both times. how is this not an accurate comparison? How a team finishes trumps everything else that happens during a game (see 5 turnovers for reference)

I have never seen a Safety mug so many recievers when he got burned (repeatedly) as KK did.

There is reason we got beat & it's the same reason the defense gave up so many yards & big plays this season. It's simply because Williams blitzed entirely too much & at inopportune moments in several games.
If not for Roddy "Stone Hands" White dropping a pass in the endzone, the team losses in Atlanta because Williams blitzed allowing the Falcons to get huge chucks of yardage at the beginning of their final drive in regulation.
Samething goes for the Titans game. Williams blitzed which left Malcolm Jenkins one on one in the flat to tackle Chris Johnson. If Jenkins doesn't make the tackle then the team loses in Tennessee as well.
You could even go back last season against the 49ers. Williams decided to blitz Alex Smith on their final possession & Smith hit Vernon Davis who was matched one on one with Roman Harper. That big play helped the 49ers drive down field to tie the score but of course Brees bailed Williams out there.
With Williams blitz heavy scheme, opposing quarterbacks had be drooling the week leading up to playing the Saints defense. They knew they would have numerous opportunities for big plays because of the high volume of blitzes Williams called for.
Those throws Alex Smith made on the the 49ers last two drives were NOT difficult throws to make. High school quarterbacks make those those throws everyday in 7 on 7 drills. It's really not hard to throw a pass to your 6'6 tight end who blew by his defender. All Smith had to do was lay the ball up for Davis.
The second pass to Davis on the slant was easy pitch & catch. There were no linebackers in the middle of the field because Wilson & Shanle were blitzing & Davis won his route at the line of scrimmage. All Smith had to do lead his pass in front of Davis through a clear window which is not that difficult.
History told us that Williams would play with fire with the game on the line. He had gotten away with it before but he didn't this time.
The 49ers started their final drive at the 15 with 1:32 left. In three plays they gained 18 yards & had burned 52 seconds off of the clock. They had to go 67 more yards with 40 seconds left to get to the endzone & at least needed 32 more yards to reach the outside range of Akers. I don't see how anyone can defend Williams here. Common sense would have said to play some sort of coverage & keep everything underneath.

you are absolutely right and I forgot about this game. we blitzed the hell out of Matt Ryan and the Falcons on that drive and they literally marched right down the field after giving up two or three big plays to Harry Douglas. And how did HD get so open? B/c we blitzed, Atlanta picked it up, and we had one on one coverage on the outside with Leigh Torrence.

Williams actually overloaded the shortside of the field & brought 3 blitzers from that side. In doing so, it left Harry Douglas completely uncovered in the slot. Not only did Williams call for that blitz once but he called for it again on the very next play. It was totally wreckless & irresponsible on his part.
On the play where Alex Smith scored his rushing touchdown, Williams used the exact same blitz overload. They showed the blitz before the 49ers took their timeout after the illegal substitution penalty & went back to it after the timeout.
It was obvious the 49ers had a came up with a play during the week if they saw that blitz. Williams overloaded the short side once again & the 49ers ran a quarterback sweep away from the blitz where they had numbers.
There was no way that defensive alignment would stop that play due to the fact they had the numbers in their favor presnap. They added to the numbers mismatch by pulling their guard out ahead of Alex Smith.

The issue is that big blitzing is high risk/high reward. When it works it looks spectacular and when it misses it looks spectacularly awful. If we play straight defense or overload the other side on the smith sneak he is dropped for a loss and maybe they miss the longer figgie and Espn is still going on about wtf was harbaugh thinking??

At the point of the game, it would been better to play straight up to defend against the run or the pass. Bringing 3 extra defenders would still open the chance for Smith to make an easy throw in man coverage if he chose to audible out of the original playcall. If Williams wanted to bring an extra defender, the better choice at that point would have been to bring the corner covering the slot like Williams used against the Titans when he brought Porter. That blitz at that point in time is hard to protect against because at that point, Frank Gore had been leaking out as a check down option leaving Smith unprotected from that type of blitz. If the 49ers run that same play against our base defense with a corner blitzing off the slot, I think the chances of whoever the corner would have been, would have high for him to chase down Smith in the backfield.

yeah my assumption is that he had an audible to throw if it looked like the saints were in a D to stop the QB sneak.
What also drove me nuts during that game is that it was pretty obvious Smith only had one or 2 reads, and so much of the time his first read was so wide open it wasn't even an issue.
