The 2006 LSU team had no running game at all. Our "running back by committee" ended up being a bunch of mediocre bums. And I would assume you cannot ignore the role that 2006 offensive line played in not being able to run the ball against good opponents.

You cannot have a dominant team in the SEC by trying to pass on every down. The 2007 team could run or pass with equal efficiency. The 2006 team could only pass.

Not sure if you just replied to me instead of the OP, but I said this team is better than 2007. Not mention of 2006.

Who knows how it will play out. Leadership and experience are question marks now. Talent is deep.

You're avatar is "jefferswag" and you immediately point out that our best year talent wise was the last one in which we had a respectable African American QB, who turned out to suck when he got to the NFL -- as opposed to Flynn who is still in the NFL for the defending world champions.

Just making an observation.

03 lost to Florida. 9 times out of 10 they win
07 loss to Kentucky and Arkansas. Should have gone undefeated.

2011.....who's to say? I think we're missing a Clayton, or a Dorsey, but it is just as important to catch the SEC when we are peaking and they are rebuilding....We have senior QB's and the rest of the league does not.

It is one of the top ten teams we have ever fielded and that says a lot.

It would almost be impossible to replace players like Clayton or Dorsey.

And I know it was in garbage time, but Freak was a FREAK. Just watching him bowl over people sent shivers down my spine. It was very Dorseyesque.

OBjr also looked very impressive thru the entire game.

The way the offense is playing together is inspirational. I love seeing all the recievers blocking downfield. Not just kinda standing in the way of defenders, but really blocking.. I haven't seen this kind of team unity from our guys since 07.

I think both 2003 and 2007 looked like this at the beginning of the year. You could see the confidence growing each week and they were dominant by Bowl time. I see Mingo and Montgomery as World Class by November.

Well, the obvious position that is inferior to the '07 team is QB, but this year's OL is probably better ... RBs may be a wash when you factor in the '07 RB experience ... the WR corps was probably better in '07, but this also is affected by the QB ..
I would have to say that our D Line and D Backs are much better this year, but the LB were better in '07 ..
However, we saw something in the Oregon game that we have RARELY seen in the Miles regime .. adjustments, both in game and at halftime (to my amazement) ... also, this team is SOOOOO aggressive (perhaps too much) but yet they still tackle well which is VERY impressive

yep over the last 10 years or so.

im not saying this team isnt talented. But it isn't out of the ordinary for the media(or anyone for that matter) to over react based on things that are clear in there head. In other words, recent events in their head are given more credibility.

Really though you hear whispers like this just about every year.. We blow someone out early or beat a decent team.. "oh my, could this be the most talented LSU team ever!?!!?!?!".....

sure, it could be the most talented team. Ask me again 3+months or so.... With my naked eye we dont have much NFL talent at WR...QB, and LB. That's 3 positions that are at best, "average".

But leadership is what wins big games and '07 had more leaders like Hester.

And we still finished the regular season 10-2...

I agree. However, one bad habit they have is letting the opponent out of a hole - on their own 1 to 5 yard line. I can't remember the last time the D had a 3-and-out when they had them pinned way back by their own goal line. It's rare.

nice point tigerpawl ... that seems to be a common theme since cheif took over the D ... hopefully with the D line we have this year, that trend will change

until they started using keiland more

this team has a better OL

i'll run down each positional group

QB: 2006 by a lot
WR: 2006 by a lot
RB: 2011 (before you say it should be by a lot, remember 2006 had keiland, scott, and hester)
TE: i'll call it even (dickson v. peterson)
OL: 2011 by a lot

DL: i'll call it a tie. DEs for 2011 and DTs for 2006
LB: 2011
CB: 2011 by a hair
S: 2006

so 2006 gets my nod, when broken down

Also, remember when trying to compare the 2006 team to another, especially when using stats/results, that the 2006 team had to play 4 top 10 teams on the road that year. No LSU team has been put through a gauntlet like that that I can ever remember. And that's why some of the media would've had LSU favored to win a mythical playoff that year.

If 2011 wins the SEC at 12-1 or 13-0, it will be pretty damn impressive though.

Right...Florida was #1, Auburn finished #8. Arky was #5 when LSU beat them, then they lost to LSU, Florida in the SECCG, and their bowl game to finish #16. Tennessee was #8 when LSU beat them, and they finished #24 at 9-4.

It's hard to judge a team like this because beating a top 10 team is likely going to drop them out of the top 10; thereby, "weakening" your own strength of schedule.
