According to SI.com draft analyst Tony Pauline, the "smart money" is currently on the Saints drafting Temple DT Muhammad Wilkerson in the first round.

New Orleans holds the No. 24 pick, and pairing Wilkerson with Sedrick Ellis would give Gregg Williams' defense one of the top young tackle duos in football. The interior line wouldn't appear to be one of the Saints' biggest weaknesses, however, especially after Shaun Rogers' addition. The Vikings, Titans, Chiefs, and Ravens have also shown interest in Wilkerson. Mar 22, 12:20 AM

Apparently Vilma is so damn good that we don't need any other linebackers?

or maybe the staff thinks the talent difference btw Wilkerson and expected available OLB's at that spot is really large? Maybe the Saints feel the OLB class is much deeper than the DL class in this draft so much so that they can still get an effective OLB later in the draft? Maybe it's just part of the smoke, mirrors and false information that always comes out this time of year?

Don't know too much about Wilkerson, but I would prefer a different position picked there.

I just think DE and OLB are bigger needs than DT

He has some really good highlights here:

(6-4, 315, 4.96 forty, 27 reps, 4.59 20shuttle according to the NFL combine results)

Yeah, out of any of our picks, I always prefer our first round pick to be a starter & a significant upgrade over a weak link from the year before. In theory, he should be the best athlete available out of all of our picks on draft day and you want your best rookie to pay rewards right away, not a year later.

It's nice that he'd learn behind Rodgers, and would provide some injury/depth insurance, but how does that pick make the 2011 DL better if he's on the bench?

Now if Rodgers is on the bench because Wilkerson is a beast, that makes the free agent move a pretty expensive one for a backup.

I think a pass rushing DE upgrade over Alex Brown is the best move here. Will Smith, Sed Ellis, Shaun Rodgers, and a legit pass rusher would be extremely disruptive and hard to move against and it would pay divdends right away.

Wilkerson is a fast riser in the draft according to some draftniks like Kiper, Mayock, et al.

I don't think Wilkerson will still be there at #24.

Deuce McCalister and Will Smith are 2 examples where taking the BPA at an already stocked position worked out for the best. I don't know a thing about Wilkerson, but the Saints should take BPA every time rather than reaching for need.

and the fact there is only one good OLB in this draft(the rest are practically DE hybrids) I think this would be a great pick

Dude is one of the most svelte 315 pounders I've ever seen. Really athletic. He's built more like a big DE than a DT.

Yeah, now that you say it, outside of Sed Ellis, Payton has arguably gone BPA every single year.

-Reggie Bush was a BPA pick even though Deuce was already our "starting RB" (with Stecker as backup) and even though we had other glaring needs.
-Robert Meachem was a BPA even though we already had Colston & Henderson & Horn and we thought we would go defense
-Malcolm Jenkins could be considered a BPA because we had just signed free agents vets Greer & Sharper, plus Porter drafted the year before
-Pat Robinson was definitely a BPA because we thought Greer/Porter/Gay were firmly entrenched, especially with glaring starting holes at OLB & DT

It's no wonder most of us are always scratching our heads after every draft and not instantly satisfied.

We need a OLB so bad and for years now.

And this year will be no different. Noone really knows who will be BPA at the 24th spot. Payton and Williams know we need OLB or DE the most. The real question does this look like the year we moved up to get Ellis. My guess they will trade up to get the upper tier DE. DT doesn't seem to be the way to go in this draft (like Freek said we have Rogers now).

Casillas was a starter at OLB and Williams has mentioned Gallete at DE getting much more time...

Jerry Jones said he has been approached by two teams interested in the pick.

Saints take JJ Watt or...?

If we did then Robert Quinn or Cameron Jordan would be the way to go IMO.

Rogers only signed a one year deal...

from another thread...

I could see them trading one of the 3rd Rders to move up but not the 2nd. #72 could only move them up to #16-17. #56 only gets them up to #14-15 btw.

Cowboys #10 would be cost inefficient IMO.

#88 gets them to #18-19. This I see as highly possible. NFC South Bucs are at #20 and definitely want the same exact thing. You not only get a premium player that you might not have but you deny your division rivals the best need/fit at the same time. Aldon Smith there would be worth jumping at.

Rogers could be re-signed into the future if he plays his arse off. Until then he has to be considered stopgap. If they saw DTs Wilkerson or Paea teamed with Ellis to be something like the vikes Williams Wall it definitely could happen. I think Wilkerson could play some LDE myself.

I could still see Cameron Jordan there if that happened. Aldon Smith most likely there too. Would probably deal with New England if moving up in that area. Seems like they would target these guys also.

Your right on about trading with the Cowboys. Simply not worth it.
