I have never been but will be going soon. Can anyone recommend some great places to eat?

Full Moon BBQ, you'll have to get past the Tide decor but it is among the best BBQ I've ever had..

Based on the crowd in the parking lot Cracker Barrel appears to be the restaurant of choice for diners in Birmingham.

All great places if you don't mind spending some money.
A few more moderately priced options:
Jim and Nicks BBQ (not the best bbq, but really good burgers, salads, chicken fingers, etc.)
Surin (really good Thai restaurant with multiple locations. The best location is at 5 Points South, which is a cool place to hang out in general.)
Of course, you could chow down on some ribs at Dreamland if you want to try the place made famous by college football broadcasts. The Bham location is not as good as the original in Tuscaloosa, but it's still a good time.
Nikki's West - consistently voted as one of the top 5 meat & veggie (cafeteria style) restaurants in the US.
If you post the area where you are staying, I can probably give you some more options specific to that area.

I travel a ton, and I've not seen many Cracker Barrel lots that weren't full.

Tigah, for some reason Bham gets ragged unmercifully for its chains but the good independent restaurants it DOES have are always overlooked for some reason.
Hot N Hot Fish Club, Veranda on Highland, Cafe DuPont, Ocean, Highlands Bar & Grill, Avo, Bottega, Chez Fon Fon, Chez Lulu, Village Tavern, Satterfields

Nikki's West
But you better know what you want or they will start yelling at you!
I second Surin West. The crab angels are a great app. The softshell crab and ka proud lamb are my favorites. Their shrimp fried rice is great.
Jim and Nicks cheese biscuits are addictive as crack but their BBQ is ok.
Rojo is a bar and has excellent quesadillas
Al's BBQ baked potato is EXCELLENT late night drunken food
Cocina Superior is a nice contemporary upscale twist on Mexican food.
La Paz is popular Mexican food.
Sol Azteca was my go-to Mexican joint. The bartender Roberto is cool as shite.
Their is better BBQ than Dreamland in Bham. Uncle Sams and Tin Roof (I think) are 2 I like. Miss Myras behind the Summit isn't bad either.
Fat Sams makes excellent greasy sandwiches and fries.
Silvatron has 1/2 off pasta night w/ HUGE portions. Their hot bacon salad is awesome.

I'd throw in The Fish Market as another decent casual seafood place. I hit up the Hoover location quite often when I lived in the area. Granted, there is no atmosphere in the restaurant itself but the shrimp and scallop fettucine alfredo was awesome. The bread was good and you got like 3 sides with an order. WAY more food than one person could eat for a very reasonable price. Fish Market's dishes are heavily Greek influenced with the owner being a very successful Greek restaurant owner in the area.
P.S. Is the Shipley Donuts location still open off of Lorna Road in Hoover? That place is great.

I like that greek place in Homewood... Nabeels I think?
Posted on 3/14/11 at 3:58 pm to Neauxla
That's correct. It looks more like a small ethnic grocery located in the neighborhood just southwest of Soho Square in Homewood. The guy from Atlanta famous for his Cuban sandwiches moved his Atlanta restaurant to Vestavia Hills. Can't think of the name of the place but it's suppose to be the only place in the area to get a really good authenic Cuban sandwich.

Ain't that the truth. It just seems that there is one at every other freeway exit on the drive from Baton Rouge to Birmingham, and they're all filled up. It's just hard to pass up an opportunity to toss out a sarcastic answer to an open ended question like this topic's. Especially when there is some semblance of truth in the answer.

Nabeel's is a really good choice. I also like Pita Stop near UAB. My only gripe is that they don't serve gyros. Their other pita sandwiches and their kabobs are "slap yo' momma" good.

If you think of it, be sure to post. My wife and I were saying this weekend that we haven't had a really good Cuban since we were in Key West 7 freakin' years ago.

Definitely. I just suggested that one because it is semi-famous. My favorite is actually on Hwy 79 between Tarrant and Pinson, called Ken's BBQ. A great little hole in the wall place.
ETA: i'm just glad no one has thrown out a crappy Cajun restaurant. Usually people start asking about Cajun restaurants and I always wonder why the hell someone from Louisiana would be interested in eating cajun anywhere else.
ETA again: Sorry about the successive posts. I actually had some work to do today, so I was away fron the droppings for a while.
