Bham definitely has better upscale restaurants. My company has customers/suppliers from all over the country (and even international). When we take them out to Hot & Hot or Highlands, they are always shocked that these restaurants exist in Alabama.

my friends said the same coming up from BR. I took them to Hot & Hot, Cafe Dupont, & Bottega. They thought Bham was all BBQ and Cracker Barrel. Bham is only slightly smaller than Nola these days and they have some pretty decent restaurants. I was shocked myself when I moved up here last year.

I always liked Dave's Pizza in Homewood. I heard Tortugas was good too.

Hot n Hot Fish Club is amazing,

My parents are on a restaurant oriented trip toward the East Coast. They ate at Hot n Hot tonight and LOVED it. They sat at the counter and watched the chefs. Thought the service was great. Loved that it was casual in one way and not in prices or other ways. They said the food was great and they liked all the noise and activity. Place was still packed after 9 when they left.

They'll eat at Highlands tomorrow night. They've been there a number of times. They love it, as well.

They will return to B'ham for the sole purpose of eating there, again. They enjoyed it, that much.

One of the grandchildren has decided to go to AL (I'm in mourning over this) and my guess is that she's going to be getting some visits from the grandparents more often than she expected.

The place is Kool Korner in Vestavia. It is better than any Cuban sandwich I have had in South Florida.

my brother was the head chef at hot and hot for about 5 years until he and his wife recently bought this place. they are slowly changing the menu. check them out if you're in the area. i don't see it on the menu, but they do have a pretty impressive gumbo.

Leonardo's in Homewood (I think it's homewood) is the best Italian I've ever had in my life. Their rolls are amazing.

It's in Vestavia on Rocky Ridge Rd. Excellent and the owner is a really cool guy.

There is also a very good pizza place in Liberty Park, Depalmas, but it is more gourmet pizza than traditional.

Pita Stop just opened a place in Cahaba Heights, they have a filet special on the weekends that I would put up against any Steak in Birmingham.

Best Monte Cristo in Bham. It's also a plus beacause you can get Voodoo Gumbo chips as a side.

I work just up the street from there and eat there a few times a week.
