Why do we oversign?

I really wish we wouldn't, it makes us look bad. Why do we repeatedly do it?

Its like a try out system the way i see. Sign as many as you want.
The weak will fall out and move around. Only the strong survive. Its a form of cheating IMO. but if its legal do it to stay competitive.
But at this rate we will have 7-10 guys every year leaving our program. Seeing Matt Allen start for TEx Ags was a brutal reminder of how much talent we have. (although I think he would have started for us this year nad possibly last but I dont know where he was on the depth chart before bailing.

Not every kid turns out to have the talent, attitude, drive, or smarts needed to be a productive member of the team. I imagine the coaches are more willing to overlook a slight lack of talent if there are no attitude or effort problems. But the fact remains, some kids choose to do things that make them expendable, and for that reason, we need people to slot in behind them.

Because the term is student-athlete and to not be held accountable for both is hypocritical.
Because some guys don’t fully rebound from injury.
Because some guys don’t work for it.
Because some guys put other priorities ahead of working in the classroom and on the field.
Because coaches are projecting how a 16-year old will play when he's 21 or 22-years old.
Because some guys don't have the mental or physical toughness or ability to play a very demanding sport.
Because sometimes you sign a future all-conference player the next class.
Because some guys put everything they have and do all that the coaches ask of them and it's the coaches’ responsibility to be honest and tell the player they’ll have a better chance of playing a game that they love elsewhere.
Because some guys are not okay being role players.
Because you take the best players available.
Because some recruits don't make the grades. Some do.
Because some recruits don't make up their minds or jump ship at the last minute and some media outlets openly encourage and profit from these actions yet vilify coaches that did not want to be left not meeting a position need.
Because when the perfect storm happens and you’ve been burned the year before and surprisingly more than the allowed recruits get eligible, you ask in-state recruits (because of TOPS and hopefully love for the program) or recruits from well-to-do families (to afford a semester of classes) or legacy recruits (because of loyalty) or some combination of the above to gray-shirt to help make the numbers work.
Because ESPfrickingN doesn't know how to properly research a story and because they are in the gossip business instead of real-life-actual sports reporting.

The real answer to this is extremely simple.
Most of the best recruits are the last to commit often waiting until NSD, and if you fill up before then, you'll never get the best since they wait until NSD.
Conversely, if you leave spots open for the best to commit on NSD, then they dont commit to you, youre left holding available schollys.
You got to try to balance it...

I'm glad we do. The SEC is in an arms race with coaches, facilities and players. If you sign with an SEC school, you know the score before hand. People need to stop being such pansies about this. It's not a big deal.

quote:Not a fan of over signing. Probably the worse think about Coach Miles.
Underachieving students lose TOPS scholarships each year, and their parents have to deal with it,
You mention Tops. How about if a Louisiana kid doesn't get an offer from LSU so he takes an offer to say Miss State and 2 years later is told his services are no longer needed, does that LA kis lose his Tops here at LSU?
