I'd love to have aTm in the SEC. Add them in the West and Virginia Tech in the East. Then if we really wanted to leave every other conference in the dust we could toss Mizzou and N.C. State into the mix.

I could live with that.

I think it would be great to have aTm in the SEC.

It's not about more mid-tier programs.
It's about new markets.
Houston and DC from Texas A&M and Va. Tech... and St. Louis/Kansas City and Raleigh-Durham with Missouri and NC State.
Adding teams from zones that we already control is pointless.
New markets is what you want for your schools, merchandise and TV contracts.

Sure! Then anytime LSU beats aTm it will count for more!

The SEC adding NC State and Missouri would be a terrible idea.

Yea, most of the SEC fans and especially LSU fans wanted A & M in the SEC. They probably still would rank them as the #1 candidate. It would take a few years for them to adjust to the depth necessary for the long SEC season like it did with Arkansas, but they would fit in well. Good history & great fan base. The SEC is as close to a super conference as their has ever been in NCAAF. If they had 4 more strong programs like A & M, they would be even more dominant.
Good post and insight. I agree with your assessment and necessary adjustments A&M would have to make to run the SEC gauntlet week in week out.

Tejas Aggies & Mechanics in the SEC???
Hell yeah! Do it.
But it has as much chance happening as Boise State going to the PAC 10...uh, I mean 12...13?

I know the chancellor, and at the time these events were going on he had come from a meeting of his peers in Florida. There were discussions ongoing, and one of the things was TAM and Duke. TAM to West, Duke to East. The Duke thing was to give Vanderbilt an easy win in football.

Hell no.
We have enough annoying fanbases in this conference...God knows we don't need y'all creeping the place up.

The TX legislature won't let us split up. It became very political. Frank the tank had a good article on it.
UT alum probably are not just concerned about loosing the long standing rivalry, but also that A&M would then have a much better hand in the recruiting wars in Texas.
Mack Brown goes into that 5* recruits home and says come to UT and play in places like Waco and Norman OK, etc and Sherman goes into that same recruits home and says come to A&M and play teams like Florida, Alabama, Georgia and LSU...

I think everything happened so fast that A&M's leadership didn't have a good feel for which direction they wanted to go. Once the decision to stay in the Big XII had been made I think the feedback from former students let them know what we'd like from our leadership.
I would not be surprised to see A&M move to the SEC in the next few years despite what some Baylor grad legislators have to say about it.

I would love to see TAMU come over to the SEC. It would add that huge Houston market to SEC which would generate our conference even more money. Plus I think A&M and LSU would develope into a fierce rivalry much like UT & OU, cross state rivals in the same conference that battles over recuits year in and year out (sorta like how it was back in the day between us). Plus correct me if im wrong but i believe Houston has the largest amount of LSU alumni in the U.S. Granted it would take a little while for A&M to be able to play at an SEC level week in and week out but they would eventually get there. If SEC added A&M one more team in the East would have to be added to balance it out and agree with the other posts that Virginia Tech would be a great option. Who knows this may all happend in a few years. But for now Geaux Tigers can't wait for the Cotton Bowl!

I'm glad at least someone else understands.
Add Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Angelo, TX; Roanoke and Richmond, VA; Springfield, MO; and, Charlotte, NC. Maybe now others can start to get the picture.
What the hell would Oklahoma bring to the SEC other than Philco AM radios?
