the team he played for makes a HUGE difference in those stats and hardware
take him away and that team wouldn't have been great at all, just merely good and probably never wins a SB.

stats do make a difference.
Let me see, Jim Brown had highest yards per carry, highest yards per game, and NEVER missed a single game. Eight rushing titles. Rules favored defenses. Clotheslining was legal when he played. 12,000 yards on 12 and 14 game seasons and 1-2 game postseasons.
He won a ring in a league dominated by the Colts, Packers, and Giants. He retired after 9 seasons, didn't hang around like Emmitt did padding the stats. Emmitt didn't strike fear into defenders and opposing coaches the way Jim Brown did.

actually that is what I've always said about Aikman. I've always thought Aikman was overrated.

I agree with this. If he is on ZONA every year. He doesn't touch 10,000 yds.

Anyone with any sense knows that Barry Sanders would have shattered the record and put it so far out of reach that nobody would even sniff it again, had he not retired so early.
Truth.
And, if Sanders and Smith switched teams, where would their respective stats be? Sanders would have been even better, and a Super Bowl winner, because there were other weapons, a great QB, and a great OL, as well as great coaching. Smith on the Lions? Good luck with that.
For my money it's between Sanders, Jim Brown, and Walter Payton as best ever.

Who thinks Emmitt Smith is the best running back ever?
I haven't bothered reading this thread but my opinion on Emmitt(and I'll just say up front he's my 2nd favorite football player all time(not just RB) and I have him ranked behind Walter Payton as my favorite)....anyway, Emmitt is the biggest overachiever ever. He isn't the best at any particular category that makes a RB "Great", except maybe his durability, toughness and vision. He wasn't the fastest, most explosive, quickest, shiftiest, strongest etc. etc. But he used every tool he had to work for him, he was a great student of the game and had arguably the biggest heart anyone's ever seen.
So based on all the intangibles, IMHO he is one of the top 3 RB's all time. Barry Sanders and a few others that get mentioned in this conversation had a lot of what if's....Emmitt just straight did that shite. No one can take away his accomplishments.

I think he is the biggest gravy trainer ever....not so bad that he followed one of the best offensive lines in NFL history, but his stunt going to Arizona and breaking the record pretty much soured me on him.
lolz. I love when people say this ignorant shite.

totally agree Ryno. Remember the year after they won the first Superbowl and he missed the first 2 games(93)...they lost those first 2 games pretty bad. Also everyone was saying during his contract dispute that Derek Gainer was just as good as Emmitt and with all the studs Dallas already had, Emmitt was irrelevant, he was just a product of a good system and a shite ton of talent around him. Well we saw it takes a little bit more to be successful in that system than just running behind a big offensive line. Also other pretty decent backs came in like Blair Thomas and Emmitt just shite all over them, made them look retarded. People always use the OL argument and it's gotten ridiculous over the years. That dude was a beast and constantly pushed the pile and made plays while he was beat the frick up.

anyone with any sense knows that "What If's" are the dumbest fricking arguments to be made in football. He DIDN'T do it. So you can never say he would have. He also could have fricked up his knee on the first play of that season he retired prematurely.

Yes, all 3 of those guys were the most talented RB's to play the game. But when it's all been said and done, Emmitt ranks right up there.

Any list without Jim Brown as #1 is incorrect.
your opinion carries so much weight since you think in every single one of these threads that the best ever has played for the Browns or Ohio State

I'd have to put him behind Barry Sanders for sure.
Here's my question. Was Emmitt better than Bo Jackson. I know Bo got injured and had a shorter carreer, but he was awesome when he played.

Reading this thread makes one thing clear: Emmit Smith is at the very least the most underrated back ever. Some of the names being tossed out as his equal are simply absurd. Pierre Thomas? Even Earl Campbell.
consistency is the #1 thing you need from a running back. It is also the least appreciated skill. I'd still rank Brown and Payton as 1 and 2, but I'd actually rank Emmitt #3.
And I friggin HATE the Cowboys. I don't think Michael Irvin has any business being in the Hall of Fame. He's the guy who benefited from have awesome teammates. But Emmitt was a workhorse back who simply got 4 yards every single time.

quote:This is ignoring the fact that Barry outplayed Emmit. He finished his career with a better ypc, better ypg, more 20+ and 40+ runs in less games, and fumbled less. All this behind a shite line with no HOF QB and no HOF WR. Just because Emmitt played longer doesn't make him better. Just means he played longer.

That said, I do respect what Emmitt accomplished in his career. But he was never the RB Barry Sanders was.

Mario Bates was as good as Emmitt Smith. Mario just didn't play for the Cowboys.

it's already been brought up. Several backs were brought in to spell Emmitt and none of them could do what he did, although several people swore it was a job anyone could do. shite like this makes me laugh very fricking hard.

i always said that bo was. if he wouldn't have gotten injured, he would have went down as the best, imo.
