Bill Parcells once said "in the NFL you are what your record says you are". There may have been better pure runners than Emmitt but for whatever reasons they didn't have the careers that he had. Whether it be physical or mental toughness...maybe competitiveness or lack there of...there was some reason that they didn't last. If you put away any bias of being a Dallas Cowboy hater and look at what he accomplished at the very highest level I don't see how anyone can say that Emmitt wasn't the best.

Its very damn simple how we can say he wasn't the best. Like I wrote, Walter Payton did everything Smith did better. Brown played fewer games and shorter seasons. They were both better than Smith. Those of us who saw Sanders play can say he is better as well. No way possible to say Payton inferior to Smith. Payton did it all: blocked, caught passes, ran his arse off, and even tackled if need by and got all the records WHILE playing on a sucky team for years.

Why do so many people have to shite on the man's accomplishments? You realize that a player doesn't have to be the "best ever" player to be in the HOF...

as for career stats, you can't compare some of these guys to Jim Brown, who left in his prime, to guys who hang on for a few years padding the stats when they have clearly lost a step.

Emmitt ran behind Moose and a freakin great Dallas OLine, and he was so short he disappeared a lot. That's his story, good back, but not even in my top 5.

1. Sanders
2. Brown
3. Payton
4. O.J.
5. the underrated Gale Sayers

You say "whatever reason" like you don't actually know the reason, lol.

Emmitt ran behind what many say is the best OL ever. THAT is one of the reasons. Sure he was good, but to ignore that is just silly.

Wow!!

Do you also think Kareem is the best basketball player of all time and Karl Malone is better than Michael Jordan? I mean, they both scored more points than he did.

Brett Favre, best NFL QB ever as well, correct?

Then there is my personal favorite. Earnie fricking Nevers, one of the best athletes to ever play the game. One of the toughest guys too.

Keep in mind Jim Brown played when rules favored defenses too. Things like head shots, taped up forearms. No way to compare Emmitt Smith to Jim Brown.

BS.

104 yards per game, 5.2 yards per carry. zero games missed. 8 times lead the NFL in rushing. Emmitt can't compare.

I just don't see this. Unless he gets traded to another team. Once Favre leaves the Vikes that offense will go nowhere FAST.

The stats and hardware say otherwise. By your logic I could make the claim that Bo Jackson was the BEST EVAR!!!!!!

The team he played for makes a HUGE difference in those stats and hardware.
