We can't have the crap that went on last year. Do you think he can/will set a date when recruits must decide?

he set one last year. It went swimmingly.

We've already signed a shitload of extra players so it probably isn't all that necessary.

Example : Zach Lee IS Signed by LSU baseball, does IT MEAN he is coming? Not necessarily.

Upcoming MLB draft will have a major impact on the future of LSU baseball
By Jim Kleinpeter, The Times Picayune
June 03, 2010, 5:45AM
Manieri is particularly edgy about this year's draft. Last season, he said he had assurances pitchers Zack Von Rosenberg (sixth round, Pirates) and Brody Colvin (seventh round, Phillies) were going to report and play college ball, but both signed at the last minute. That left Mainieri scrambling for replacement players a week before the fall semester.
Never again, Mainieri said. He said the signing class will be wrapped up long before the Aug. 15 Major League signing deadline, and he dispatched assistant coaches David Grewe and Javi Sanchez on recruiting trips this week. Grewe is monitoring the Junior College World Series.
"We're not going to wait until the 11th hour again and get burned, " Mainieri said. "I was told emphatically neither one was going to sign. You feel used. I'm all for letting the kids do what they want. I don't want any kid at LSU that doesn't want to be here. If he's got his heart set on pro ball, then go sign -- just don't drag it out to the end and use us. I'm not going to let that happen any more."
Walking the line between recruits that are too good and those on the bubble is one of the nuances of being a college coach. Major League teams now offer to pay the full ride for college expenses, plus a signing bonus, if the player gives pro ball a try first.
Von Rosenberg accepted a $1.2 million signing bonus, which is more like first-round money rather than what a sixth-round pick would normally get.
"To me a kid can tell you everything he wants, but the draft tells you what he's telling the scouts, " Mainieri said. "I learned my lesson the hard way last year. If a boy goes in the top 10 rounds, then he's probably given an indication that he's going to sign, and the statistics show us that most of the kids drafted in the top 10 rounds end up signing.
"If we have players drafted early, we're going to assume their going to sign and spend the rest of the summer trying to replace them."

Top 10? I disagree with that. Look at Jon zeringue from Ed white. He was picked in the third round and came to lsu.

maybe for top 10 rounds, we should act like he's not coming to LSU, then if he comes to LSU, we can always Matt Gaudet (cut) someone else.

Article is dead on...LSU has rarely had rosters loaded with top 10 round talent. Heck, even Ranaudo was an 11th rounder because of injury concerns.
Majority of kids LSU plays with are mid to late round kids (20-30+ rounders). Just go back and look at the player bios.
Mainieri is dead on not expecting top 10 round pitchers or position players will ever suit up b/c the history of LSU baseball has proven that.
Top 10 rounders are more windfalls than anything. Mid-late rounders is where you make your hay...unless their is something very unique about the situation.

I like this from PM. But with signing all these guys this year, I don't think we'll get burned again. We signed a ton of guys, and if everyone makes it to campus, hey we got 35 roster spots. When the whole team gets together for tht first team meeting you tell them if they want a spot, go earn it. As of right now, I would say Mahtook, Nola and Hanover are the only ones guaranteed to be starters next year, and hell if there is someone better than them put them on the field.

Some of the statements Maneri makes in that article makes me believe he has no clue how the contract negotiations can go down. I stayed close to ZVR's situation last year. What you had was an paid negotiator (Pirates), a college coach giving ultimatums, and an 18 year kid who just wants to play baseball. The Pirates knew what he wanted to sign for, they just didn't offer it until Zach was going to sign with LSU. It's not like they called him the day after he was drafted and said here's 1.2 mill, take your time deciding what you want to do with your future.
If Maneri comes out with a cut off date before negotiations get too deep then at least it will be a known date in which a decision has to be made.

That article seemed like it was done in the heat of the moment. Mainieri came off as not knowing how the draft process worked, which I'm sure he did.

Like what?
He knows the best offer isn't made right after the draft. All he is saying is that if someone is picked in the top 10 rounds he is going to move forward with finding a replacement instead of waiting for the final answer in August, which is too late for him.

if you can load up on late round HS guys(mahtook, landry, lemahieu, etc), and maybe get one or two top 15 round guys(ranaudo, jared mitchell, chad jones), you're going to win a ton.
I think if can get Lee to campus and one maybe 2 others in the top 10 or so, we'll be perfectly fine
