After the 1 minute commercial. Method was used successfully in the Arabian Gulf in the '90s using supertankers.

WWL radio is on the air right now making this very public on the airwaves. We need Obama to step up and get the ball rolling on this proven method ASAP.

Here's another source. Seems like BP doesn't want to really hear it though!

I saw this on Nightly News tonight and it sounds like a great idea. My only question is this...

The Arabian Gulf incident was a spill so there was a finite amount of oil in the water, so they were able to encircle it and contain it. The GOM incident is a leaking well, so the amountof oil released continues to add up. As the tankers were filled and moved off site, unless you had others on standby to replace them, (and even if you did because the ships don't fit together), wouldn't there would still be a large amount of oil getting beyond containment?

I know it would be better to get some as opposed to none, but as long as it is leaking out, it is like bailing water on the Titanic.

I like how he characterized it as an "unpublicized spill". Things that make you go hmm.

Where is this "fleet of supertankers"? Who owns them? How long will it take to get them over here?

How do we know it is proven if it involved an "unpublicized spill"? Did the world ever know about this particular spill?

They should be doing all of these things at once instead of trying them one at a time.

They should have 100 navy ships out there skimming the oil in big long rows. All hands should be on deck but Obama is just afraid to get too close to this in fear he will be blamed. Looks like it's already happening.

I agree. The solution should be in parallel. Two separate issues that need to be handled differently. 1) stop the leak 2) clean up the mess. There is so much focus on stopping the leak but not enough on containing and cleaning up the mess.

True, the leak must be stopped, but the multiple supertanker idea is a lot better than the 2,000 bbl / day recovery BP has been trying to do with the siphon method.

Let's hope the top kill works tomorrow.

Somewhat serious question. Where do we get 100 navy ships that aren't doing something else right now and would they be equiped to skim oil?

There is a HUGE difference in the water depth between there and here. And we have dispersed much of the oil into the water column. It's not just sitting on top waiting to get sucked up.

i have a device that would do a rough separation(80-90%) of oil and water which can be used with the commercial fishing fleet. cant get anyone to look at it. I could ship a truckload of tanks from 200-500gals everyday to the gulfcoast putting the commercial fisherman back to work cleaning up their wetlands. its depressing trying to get anywhere with these people.

There's enough floating on the top worth trying to keep from hitting land. That's some really thick stuff southeast of the delta.

He also used hay as booms to help corral the oil.

There are only 283 active ships in the entire fleet. That includes submarines which would be useless, and aircraft carriers that never travel alone. They'd have a hard time mustering 30...

It would seem like this oil would really be packed in along the rip currents, that wouldn't be a bad idea to have a couple of these Super Tankers working along the rips where the oil should be held in place and congregrated.

The problem is that Obama doesn't want to prevent oil on the coast. He can use oil on the coast as a catalyst to enact new drilling regulations and further demonize the oil industry. Obama will try to use this disaster to his advantage.
