for all of you who are running for the hills in expectations of the end of the world. Today I did something to put this thing into perspective. I googled the volume of water in the GOM, it is 646 quadrillion gallons of water, that is 6.46x 10 to the seventeenth power gallons of water. What is the ratio of dilution of 5,000-11,000 barrels(55 gallons per barrel) of oil being released from the spill. It is sixty miles offshore, a lot of the oil will drift on the surface for years, never touching land whatsoever. The oil that does reach land will get to a sandy beach. That sand can be sent to a remediation incinerator and the oil burnt off, and the sand returned to a beach, or used to make concrete. Now will you stop crapping in your pants?

Trust me, his stupidity is astonishing. And covers so many areas of human endeavor.

Wrong in so many ways this dumb post is.

While you're googling fun facts, try "How many US gallons in a barrel of oil.

Have you ever been to the La. Coast ?

Tell that to Florida residents who have been opposed to offshore drilling for decades for this very reason. Louisiana's livelyhood depends on seafood and Florida's depends on tourism. This accident will probably end up fricking both states. If I was Florida, I'd hate Louisiana.

Louisiana's livelihood depends more on oil than seafood.
Though there is a lot wrong with his post.

when gas reaches $4/gal., even the beaches in FL suffer, because the cost to travel. The only long term effect, will be in the minds of the cry babies

Problem is that oil doesn't "dilute" in water very well

this is one time i am 100000% in FAVOR of sensationalism. Maybe it will help get this fricker stopped if people think it's worse than it is. Yes, i know about the negative image it can paint of offshore drilling but that is easily remedied if they pull back on drilling and prices spike....people are only as idealistic as they can afford to be.
