DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla.-- A Florida Panhandle county plans to spray hay into the Gulf of Mexico to absorb oil before it reaches the coastline.
Walton County Emergency Management and a local contractor say barges equipped with blowers would spray hay into the water, where it will adhere to the oil and make it easier to remove.

interesting: the question was presented to the LSU engineering department about using Bagasse (bi-product of Sugar cane harvesting)to absorb the floating oil.
Their reply "problem may be stimulation of blooms due to resulting low dissolved oxygen. this is of course creating a different problem but still a better option than the chemicals.

Wouldn't chicken feathers be a better option (not meant to be a jab Chicken). Seriously though oil sticks to feathers pretty well and there must be a shite load of them coming from processing plants.

I've seen Cottonseed Meal or Hulls used to simulate an oil spill in the Mississippi River.
I would think hay might create a problem. Never seen this used.

There's a group in N.O. collecting human hair, animal fur and old stockings to make oil absorbing booms. Swear to God. The drop off point is at the Ritz-Carlton on Canal St. (If you've got any hair, fur or stockings laying around the house)

I thought people were donating hair to help soak up the oil.
Either way that must be a shitload of hay.

They have oil spill equipment that is designed for this....one of the better items to use in this is the Oil Mop......can be setup quickly and oil can be removed to storage tanks.

LSUDad - In some circumstances, I'm all for the public involving theirselves. Howevr, this seems like a situation best left to professionals - oil spill response companies and commercial fisherman who are properly trained.
Besides, what kind of sick bastard wants to grab a handful of hair and fur and stuff it into a pair of used pantyhose? frick THAT!

This is so true.......
I've attended oil spill schools in Paradis, Louisiana. These people are trained and have the equipment to handle this problem.

I was thinking we could get all of the school janitors to go out and pour sawdust on the slick!

Toss Bread into the slick. The seagulls will take care of the rest.
