Just heard Tim Brando on radio say that "a lot of LSU guys fell because they weren't developed" and that Al Woods has a lot of talent, as does Brandon Lafell, but that because of their lack of being developed, the first LSU player wasn't taken until the third round.

I had posted this in the Al Woods thread but wanted to get everyone's thoughts without hijacking it.

So LaFell was developed in '09, but not in '10? He was listed as a 1st rounder after his Jr. season. They seemed to have felt he was a 1st rounder then.

LaFell's problem was the QB.

Clearly Brando is a negatiger.

Nobody can be critical of the program without being so.

I could believe Woods, but Lafell has no excuse.

Brando is a talking head, do not listen to him as though he knows all.

Lafell wasn't highly regarded coming out of high school. LSU developed him into a 3rd round draft pick.

It also seems that he and Jones both flunked their interviews...and Jones certainly didn't appear to take his preparation for workouts/combine very seriously. If anything Woods is lucky to go in the 4th, there are intangibles that great d-linemen show that aren't "developed", and I never really saw any of these from him.

Does LSU get any credit for developing Perry Riley?? According to Derby he was a waste of a scholarship...

I like Timmy B., but think he's off base here; consider:

Al Woods is the poster child for small HS dominators that never quite make it in D1 CFB. He has all the physical tools, but just doesn't go full bore every snap.

If I recall, B. Lafell was rated about a 3-star player coming out of HS, so if anything he probably achieved more than he should have. His lack of burning speed & consistent hands are what kept him from being drafted higher.

Can both have solid NFL careers? Yes, and here's hoping they do.

Who was the last 5* recruit LSU had that was drafted in the 1st round?

My guess is Laron Landry. There aren't that many 5-star recruits across the country each year, & LSU hasn't had that many over the years.

Just heard Tim Brando

How many names did he drop before he got to the actual opinion?

Brando is a national guy, and like most national guys IMHO he's a fairly self-absorbed face who has a superficial surface knowledge of much and a specific knowledge of little.

It's been about 30 years since he covered the LSU beat.

I'll admit I lean toward agreement with him here, but I've heard enough from him where in matters LSU his opinions have very little credibility with me.

Hate to say it, but I agree. Which player(s) over the past few years have done a Hester and exceeded expectations?
