Need Vehicle Purchase Suggestions

Okay, so it's just me and the wife. I drive a truck that is 11 years old with 130K miles, but still runs OK (nothing catastrophic wrong with it yet). She had a small, 4-dr car. Both vehicles are completely paid off, and have been for some time, so we've never had a car note to pay ( <-- is clutch, BTW). We suddenly & unexpectedly find ourselves in the market for a new vehicle to replace her car.
I obviously have a say in the type of vehicle we buy, but she will be the primary driver of whatever we buy. She wants either a 4-door "bigger" car (meaning like an Accord-type as opposed to a Civic-type) or a small SUV (like a GMC Acadia or Jeep Grand Cherokee-type vehicle), and I'm fine with either of those. Her primary reasoning behind that mode of thought is that we are THINKING that we'll be toting infants around in this vehicle,...EVENTUALLY (we plan on having kids, but not for about another 3 years). She wants something that will be easy to get a kid in a carseat in and out of.
Now...
Given the age of my truck relative to her old car (which was only 4 years old), the PLAN had been to drive my truck until it exploded, and then buy a new truck (probably in 1-3 years), which would leave us with a new truck and a 7 yr old car in time for the babies to start coming. Now, the shite has been flip-flopped.
Now, the liquidation of her old car is only going to get us about $5K-$7K cash towards the new one. We've got enough stowed away to pay for whatever we end up buying in cash (we're not rich, but we're both cheap and both savers..and like I said, neither of us has had a car note in several years). That being said, I REFUSE (on the grounds of principal) to spend over $40K at the ABSOLUTE HOLY shite MAXIMUM on whatever we buy here, but I'd like to keep it in the $15K-$30K range.
Do we:
A. Buy a FUN car (either a fun, sporty car that we can enjoy now while it's just us) and then get rid of it in 3 years when the kids come around
b. Buy a NEW, BASIC car (like a new Accord or new Acadia) that is nice now (albeit a little conservative) but will still be useable when we have chirrens
c. Buy a USED, LUXURY car (like an Infiniti, Acura, or BMW) since this will be the last chance we have to buy something nice before we have chirrins eatin up all the food and sucking up all the monies
The Money Board's feedback is greatly appreciated.

I'd go B, but used and real nice and loaded...keep it through kid 1 (1 carseat in the middle) ...then, before kid 2, with the money you saved, get new a 2013 40k loaded honda odyseey.....

Prius now. Used truck in a couple of years. If you're both tightwads, you won't regret it.

not answering your question, but just an observation: Children who ride in the back seats of cars cannot see the outside world very well. Children in the back of SUVs can.
The former are bored, maybe whiny and not stimulated; converse true for the latter.
My nephew (7 years old) abhors his Dad's Prius. My kids hated it when my wife had a car; we only recently learned why.

I would go with 'B'..4-door sedan. But I WARN you, women with children have a natural instinct to want mini-vans or small SUVs. Back in the 50s it was station wagons.
My daughter in law has one child and a second on the way. My son and I gave her some money for a new car to replace a very old 4-door sedan.
She went with a Toyota Highlander. It's in the hormones and there is nothing you can do about it.

B is what I think you should do, A is just satsifing your ego, and C will leave you in the money miles in 3 years when it will hurt you the most

d. Buy something both of you would like and that you would not mind driving for a long time after you "inherit" the vehicle in three years to replace your existing truck and then get your wife something to accommodate kids at that time. No way I would blow $40k on a vehicle, it is just pissing money away, and you likely will be buying another vehicle within the three year period. How much more satisfaction would would gain in driving a $40k vehicle compared to $30k?
We have two vehicles that have been paid off for years and that's the way it's staying.....

When my kids were little my schedule was more flexible than my wifes so I was the one who hauled the kids to doctors appointments, mother's-day out, school etc., a mini van was a necessity and had nothing to do with female hormones. The station wagon and four door sedan worked in the 50s-60s because hardly anyone used infant car seats. After one day of trying to bend over and get a 20 pound kid strapped in a kiddy seat in the back of 4 door car you will be out shopping for a minivan with sliding doors and the much greater seat height.

Well, that's true. When I was a kid not only did car-seats not exist. Seat belts did not exist. But, I survived somehow.

Yeah, mothers used to drink when pregnant, too, and most of us turned out fine.

How about an upgrade or higher edition 'B' choice car? Like a bigger engine or more luxury options?

What about a used Acura MDX? Get one that is 1-3 years old.

My plan is to buy truck NEW and run it for 10-13 years then rinse and repeat. That way I will stay under warranty the longest rather than only get a few years of warranty with a used truck. (plus really the value of buying a used trucks isnt really there when you factor in incentives and rebates) many new trucks turn out cheaper than the used ones on thier lots.
My fiance will be buying used cars only since she will probably want a new one again in 5 years.

How quickly are you looking to do this? I ask because I am in the market for a sedan. Send me an email at leothelionlsu at yahoo.com with the year, make, model, and mileage if you plan on selling soon.
