According to the Gilbeau article on the front page of TD, Manieri lists his batting order and Hanover is in the 4 spot.
I hope he lights it up this weekend!
Watkins
Nola
Dean
Hanover
Gibbs
Landry
Mahtook
Gaudet
Delatte

It's been beat up on this board since it came out last week. I'll default my opinion to our head coach that just won the fricking National Championship last year.

Eh I don't really read the Tiger Rant so thats my bad.
I just think its funny that your stereotypical clean up hitter is a big juiced out masher, and we are putting the smallest guy on the team in the hole. But he can certainly rake so I don't doubt he'll be producing there.

I think this is hilarious.
I have to admit, my first thought was... WHAT???
But the Coach knows more about baseball than I do. I'm going to defer to his wisdom.
But still... WHAT????

the main thing Maineri is concerned with is protecting Dean and he believes Hanover is the best or one of the best rbi producers on the team and can protect dean the best

That makes a lot of sense. Dean got out of whack last year when he was pitched around.

You dont really need a great HR hitter at the 4 spot..you just want a guy who can hit for a high average and also hopefully alot of doubles...which translates into alot of RBIs. PM obviously feels Tyler will do both of the above along with maybe 8-10 dingers.
I think Hanover is gonna have a monster year RBI wise. Cant wait to see..

Dean stands to drop a lot of bombs this yr, so I like Tyler bein 4. Kinda like a 2nd leadoff after Dean goes yatzhee..

who else is going to bat 4th? seriously?
theyll walk Dean to get to Landry, Gaudet hasn't played in over a year, Gibbs is a little too inconsistent at times. Who else is there?

They'll find someone else to bat cleanup as the season progresses. These first 20 games allow Mainieri to tinker- this won't work and won't last long.

Tommy Herr in '82 (I think) had over 100 RBIs with only 9 HRs. Of course he had Vince Coleman and Ozzie Smith on ahead of him and Jack Clark behind him, but you don't always need to hitting the ball out of the park to be an effective run producer.

All I know if that if I was a pitcher, going from Dean's batting box to Hanover's will be quite the adjustment.

I agree. While he might be a decent RBI guy, he's not a big enough power threat to really provide Dean with the protection he'll need. The way to protect Dean is by having the guy behind him be a serious threat to make a team pay with a 3-run bomb, not a double down the line. Despite the CWS championship, Manieri is not infallable, and I think some of his lineup moves aren't above question. But baseball is a long season, and one of the great things about PM is that he's not afraid to try new things and make adjustments--even drastic ones.

I think Hanover will eventually be in the big leagues, but he certainly does not fit the normal role of the big stick at #4. But if he hits for average, this might be a good move. Swung at a lot of bad pitches last year though.

My hope is that TH becomes a bit more discretionary in his pitch-to-hit selection. With his diminutive strike zone he has the potential of being a mid-lineup leadoff hitter with big-time hitters behind him.

I think most everyone on this board who doesn't follow baseball closely looks at Hanover's height (5'6) and automatically questions Mainieri tatics.
Again what most people "don't" know is Hanover was in my opinion the top position player out of North Carolina in 08 which has produced numerous draft eligible high school products just in the past 3 years alone.
I'll say this now and I'll say it till the day Hanover graduates, he alone was not drafted professionally because other scouts were skeptical of his potential to fill out and get stronger with the wooden bat.
One thing I have noticed is this kid has the quickest bat speed as ANYBODY on the team right now. Compare him to Mike Fontenot if you will, he's going to do great things with the aluminum bat. I predicted him to hit 10-12 HR's this year, like someone already mentioned you don't need the most powerful guy at the 4 hole if the power is spaced out efficiently.
He did in fact struggle at times late last year as did any guy going through a freshman skid, but he also came in on a (National Championship Team) and won a starting gig as a freshman filled with guys who were in the system 3+ years.
Just my 2 cents

This hits the nail on the head

Well, ANYONE hitting in the 4th position on this team will have a monster RBI year just by virtue of opporunity. You could hit 240 and still probably have 50 to 60 RBI's just by hitting with the bases full of runners so often.
And let's remember Schimpf. Being little does not mean you can't hit the ever-living snot out of the ball.
