Most people don't understand the real issue. We could shut down our athletic department and still face budget cuts at LSU. One has little to do with the other.
The state needs to revamp the entire budget system so education and health don't get the axe every time we have shortfalls. Everything else is protected from cuts.

Teachers don't pack in 90k to watch a math class or poetry reading. suck it up! Work year round.

i don't begrudge the athletics department their money, but if you think most college professors don't work year round (and at a much higher rate than 40 hours per week), you don't know a damn thing about college professors.
Posted on 1/21/10 at 12:39 pm to fatboydave
and the same goes for educators at lower levels.

Name one "professional" occupation where people don't work more than 40 hours per week.
Attorneys? More
Medical Doctors? More
Accountants? More
etc
etc
etc
Welcome to modern society.

Klaus,
Since you've made this bold statement of fact, please tell me, without looking on the internet for answers, in your opinion, what is a fair salary for the following:
-an assistant professor in the 6th year of teaching with a Doctorate degree
-international recognition in their field and continued international presence in the field
-multiple years of unpaid service to their university, deparment, college, and community through various committees, recruiting, community initiatives and outreach
-a track record of success in student job placement
Also, what do you think the current starting salary is for an assistant professor with a terminal degree?
Get over it nerd.

blaming the LSU athletic department or the gov. for this problem is ignorant and childish
a large portion of the states budget is untouchable like Eliott Ness

According to the USAToday, LSU and Nebraska are the only two athletic departments in the nation not spending student fees or university subsidies. Also, not a single penny of taxpayer money goes into the LSU athletic department budget.

Many of the athletic programs don't spend student fees. LSU and Nebraska dont spend subsidies.

We'd actually face MORE cuts since the Ath. Department GIVES money to the university in the form of astronomical auxiliary fees, $1 ticket surcharge, TAF scholarships (remember the Cox Building was renovated with TAF $$), oh and while their at it...they usually throw in 1-5 million annually to the general fund.

We clamor for a better football team, that is what is addressed.
We dont urge and post hate mail because our English lit scores are slipping.
Hell, we love average teachers. But a 9-4 football coach we want run out of town.
We are getting exactly what we deserve.

The football program pays for itself unlike instructors. Different situation.
But, ummm, there'd be no football team w/o a university, which, by definition, is an institution of higher learning, not an excuse to have a sports program.

Although you clearly are misinformed and more than likely a complete idiot......LSU's athletic program does not accept public funds and is completely self sufficient. The coaches raises in salaries has absolutely no impact on these teachers.

Where is $300,000 of Les' salary coming from.....tax money!
When the University takes zero dollars from the athletic dept. then you can make this arguement.
But at the moment the university gets 7 million a year from athletics so in reality the athletic dept is paying the entire salary.
So we can do two things here. One you can shut the frick up, or the University gets zero dollars from athletics and then you can bitch your little whiney arse off.

How many hours are spent in the classroom by the professors? I read an article that being a college professor was one of the best jobs in the world.

The whole wafb story is crazy. How many people in this thread were at the faculty senate meeting? how many in this thread talked to the people directly involved in the Save LSU campaign.
The person in charge giving the speech at the faculty senate I dont think even mentioned football or coaches salary. Off the record, in one small interview they talk to an english instructor in the hallway before the meeting and got that qoute about coaches salary.
Most of the discussion at the faculty senate was not favorable towards Jindal. Not much if anything was mentioned that actually occurred at the faculty senate meeting. Poor reporting if you ask me.

the football program is self sufficent, the teachers pay comes from the state, get over it, has been like this for decades....
Posted on 1/21/10 at 6:19 pm to Mudminnow
I think people are quick to mention the athletic program just to point the finger rather than address the actual issue. Giving the coaches a pay cut will not solve anything. The university needs to increase tuition because it won't be getting more money from the state anytime soon. If the university increased tution by say $1500. With 25,000 students that would bring in an extra $37 million a year. Kids go there and receive a service. They should have to contribute to it.

I think it was just an uniformed person spouting off. Most everyone would look for facts before talking in front of news camera.
the Save LSU goal is unified and are addressing the issues.
