...the clock?

False start or run the play before the whistle was blown for the 1 second...

Just wondering if any penalty we could have incurred would have stop the clock before it could have started giving out field goal unit enough time to run out.

not on a false start, it is a DEAD BALL penalty, the clock would have stopped, 5 yrd penalty enforced and able to kick a FG

That means we would have had basically a half a second to have a false start penalty called... refs wouldn't have called it IMO.

I don't think you can do that, but I have not seen the college rule. The NFL has a 10 second runoff rule. I have to think college has some rule to prevent this.

How many threads have been started about this? It really shows the football IQ of the average Ranter. People should have to pass a test before they post here.

Im pretty sure that there is set amount of time that is a mandatory run off of the clock on a false start that late in the game.....I'm pretty sure but I could be wrong.

if we couldn't think about a field goal or running another play, how in the hell would we have thought of this or an injury or any of that other crap.

No...this is dumb game ends on offensive penalty. Go back and watch the play. If we would have snapped it it would have been an illegal formation (Black wasnt covered up which makes him a receiver)

Our high school coach used to have a code word that meant an offensive player goes down with an "injury" just for situations like this. He has since retired but I am willing to bet he would come in and advise Les on coach for a nominal fee.

Back in 1999, when we were playing Bama at Bama, we were on about the 2 yard line with no time outs and a bootleg was called. Josh Booty pulled a Les Miles and rather than throwing the ball away, tried to run it in. He was stopped. There was about 9 seconds or so left on the clock and TWO Alabama players were hurt on the play. The ref stood over the players and signalled clock stoppage and the clock never stopped. I believe one of the players had a season ending knee injury on the play... I forget his name but he was an all-sec player.

Anyway, point being, an injured player doesn't always stop a clock... at least not in Tuscaloosa.

Everybody mentions the false start, and that obviously wouldn't have worked. A personal foul after the play might have done some good, but I don't know the specific rule on that happening in that situation.

Could you maybe have called a time out earlier? or not run 3 pass plays in a row? or hike the ball and try to make a play into the endzone?

His name was Marvin Constant and he never played another down of football. GAve it all for the play and lost his career but gained a legend.

Yep, that's him... won the SEC West and later the SEC thanks to that play... and thanks to Josh Booty's stupidity... and the refs not stopping the clock :-)
