I really enjoyed this film. Farrell, Gleeson and Fiennes were all terrific and Clémence Poésy is gorgeous.

Outstanding movie. Normally, I don't like anything Ferrel does, but he was great in this movie. I only rented it because I've been to Bruges and wanted to see it on film. It's one of the favorite places I've been in Europe.

Ferrel should have received some Oscar love. His ability to switch back and forth from comedy to tragedy was amazing.

Great movie.

It is also cool that I have been to Bruges, Belgium and have seen the place where it was filmed.

I can try to search through my pictures from my Europe trip this summer to see if I can find the ones I took there.

Once I visited, it made perfect since why they chose Bruge as the city.

I has always wondered, "Where are all the people? Did they close off an entire city to film this?"

Well, the answer is--Bruge is the definition of a tourist center. The old money in the area/power wants to keep it that way (they refuse to have any type of attractions that would bring in a younger crowd or would make people want to live there). Therefore, the city is literally empty at 6 PM through the night. I noticed in the film there were quite a bit of night/dusk shots with no people and this would explain it.

So there is some background to the location. It is a nice city--but wayyy too touristy for my liking.

I'm having to load my pictures onto photobucket. I'll get them on here eventually.

It had been awhile since I had watched the movie whenever I visited, but I tried taking pictures of things I thought I remembered from it.

It's no different than any other Europena attraction in that lots of tourists visit. But, Bruges is a pretty small city and sometimes it seems like it'
s over run with tourists. It's not, really. And, when you find those hidden gems like we did that are really only known to locals, it made for a great time. One of those "locals" bars we went to, the guy at the door wasn't going to let us in because he knew we were tourists, and American at that. Well, we stood outside the door talking to him about beer and how Belgian beer was the best in the world and that's why we came to Belgium anyway, he said, "You know, I think I might have one empty table upstairs. Come on in."

Time to give some pics for those interested...

This is where you enter the city. The city is to the left and we were walking from right to left over a bridge.

The tower from the film--the finale where he jumps from the top.

Another angle of the tower.

Here is a picture of the main square in Bruges. The tower is to the left out of the picture to give you some reference.

This is a restaurant on the square. I couldn't remember exactly which restaurant Ferrell is sitting at when he sees his friend jump to his death. I think I was able to narrow it down to two possibilities--so here is one of them.

The tower from across the city.

I remembered them showing ducks/swans at one point in the movie (or I think I did)...well here they are.

How can you not take a picture of that?

Not sure if this was ever shown in the movie. This is the Woman's Abby/Shelter for widowed women. Pretty area under the trees.

The city.

Not sure if this was included in it or not.

Good shot of the square.

This is the other option of the restaurant that Farrell was sitting at. This would be the most likely candidate. It was only about 100 yard MAX from the base of the tower.

I saw about 12 cities in Belgium alone and Bruge was easily the most touristy of them all--it wasn't even a competition.

I'm quoting what the tour guide told us as well--he was a professor at a local college.

I'm not saying there are not a few local spots, because there always are, but he gave us a lot of information on why Bruges is the way it is today.

Great flick. Written and directed by one of our greatest current playwrights. If you're one of those people that hate theatre, give one of his plays a shot. Lieutenant of Inishmore would be a great one.

edit. sorry. martin mcdonagh

Same here. It even withstands repeated viewings. I voted for it in the Roscoes.
