Why haven't I seen this before...too bad LA legislature let Hurricane Chris recently do his thing or else this would be even better material.

It really depends on what you are studying and what your focus is in within that major. I know just about every student that goes through the Internal Audit program at LSU will get an internal audit job before the student of any other university in the Country. Same can be said about the landscape design school and the architecture school. Also our Mass Communications school is tops. What it comes down to in life, is not necessarily how good the education was or who you know. It's who knows you.

She makes the papers here all the time. It is AMAZING that she keeps getting voted to her position. Classic. Undergrad at FAMU. Hard to believe she has a MASTER'S in education and she can barely speak.

It is amazing that clown was voted into office and is actually allowed to speak at a podium in front of civilized individuals.

I seriously wonder how these 'ratings' come about? We all saw the release of the Florida Chancellor's rankings - is that the basis? How is research being measured ( and should it really matter when it comes to getting an education - the physics department at LSU was all about research when I was there and they were supposedly on probation & definitely sucked as instructors on the whole... )? These are real questions I am asking - not just a bitterapple response - as, logically speaking, I don't get it. Its not something that is easily measured. And don't get me wrong; I saw plenty lacking in classrooms at LSU in my field. I just haven't seen a way to measure one school to another outside of pure perception.

Why do people have such a hard time accepting that LSU is not all that on the academic front? There is no "perception" that La has the second worst public schools in the country. They can measure the average ACT/SAT scores for incoming freshman. They can measure admission requirements. They can measure how students due in various testing to get into grad school or attain certifications. Maybe job placement and starting salaries.
In the end, LSU is probably a middle of the pack SEC program.
Sometimes I tell some of my die hard LSU buddies that Texas A&M is a better school than LSU and they are shocked. They just can't understand it with all of those Aggie jokes and such.
And then when you throw in how much better Texas is then A&M, you really get the funny looks.

Both of these have improved significantly since 2004. I think the average score on the ACT is close to a 26 for the last freshman class.

The U.S. News and World Report ranks UF 49 and LSU tied for 130. They also rank 10 of the S.E.C. institutions in what they call the top tier of colleges with LSU being 10th. MSU and Ole Miss are in the second tier which is certainly no disgrace. There are currently 2618 accredited colleges and universities in the USA. Therfore, 49 and 130 are both relatively high scores IMHO.

It also depends on the department. I would put LSU Chemical Engineering up against any in the South.

damn, maybe I should have gone to UF?
I have UT (Texas), A&M, La Tech, etc. grads who report to me, as I'm a manager of Project and Maintenance services.....maybe I would be VP by now over the whole lot had I gone to UF?

You guys need to remember that all of these ranking are mostly based on student admissions. As LSU takes the bulk of it's students from LA (not known for the quality of it's K-12 educational system), LSU will naturally rank lower. Trust me, an LSU degree can take you anywhere. I got my degree from LSU and I now work on the Large Hadron Collider (in fact I spent part of my day helping to straighten out a guy from MIT).
...And remember, once you get to college, the quality of your education is really up to you.

I think it was the USA today rankings of the top 150 colleges in the nation(public and private I'm pretty sure).
The top ranked SEC school was UF at around 50ish.
LSU was nowhere to be seen.
:edited in:
Vandy had to have been above UF, but I can't remember where they were at now.

True, plus harder to get into. Think about the amount of people that live in Florida. They are able to be much more selective.
but they have like 46,000 undergrad to LSU 25-26000
