You don't think maybe UT felt TT was overrated. Honestly he hasn't really produced up to a 5* standard at least as of yet...

I didn't read the whole thread. I assumed "mistake" meant that the assumption was that he was going to be, at the very least, all-conference type player

he hasn't exactly had an easy depth chart to top. doucet, lafell, byrd then lafell and byrd (when he was #3)
and he's not huge, and this staff is obsessed with bulking up guys
chad jones has done poorer for a highly-regarded guy up to this point, but that's rarely brought up

Poorer............ It's also rarely brought up because you be a fricking dumbass if you typed it.
Chad Jones has played all over the field and made huge plays in critical situations.........He knocked the ball down against Florida in 07 when the clock hit zero.......He made the biggest play against Bama when that fumble popped out...........oh don't forget the punch that saved us 7 points at this year Bama game............
For a sophmore in a crowded Defensive backfield Chad Jones is right on track.

his one true impact play in a winning game
TT has made many crucial catches and produced last year more consistently than chad jones ever has

as opposed to a sophomore in a crowded receiving corps?
*ETA: i'm not hating on chad jones, just comparing sophomores who haven't "lived up to the 5-star expectations"
there are reasons for this

I don't want to get in a bitching contest between TT and C. Jones, but I don't see how you can say TT has been more of a success than Jones to this point.
Jones has made interceptions, sacks to change ball games, swatted balls that would have been 6 points, and been an overall solid defender in a shitty system where he was forced to play out of position.
TT has not had the chance to do anything yet. He has been down the depth chart his entire career. Other than the fade route he caught against Ole Miss, I can't think of a very meaningful play of his in his first two years.
I think next year is the coming out party for both of these guys, so I am not going to start a meaningless bitchfest.

I'm not hating on TT. I believe there is a lot of factors out of his control the have contributed to his avg start to his career (Depth and QB play).
I'm just saying that maybe Mack Brown wasn't that high on him and that is why he didn't go after him when he found out it was going to be a NSD battle.
The more I think about his philosophy the more I like it especially due to his position of power in the state of TX (Sorry A&M, UT is not worried about the Farmers one bit). Build a very very solid group of recruits very earlier and concentrate on keeping them instead of over-extending yourself courting 5* NSD guys and possibly losing guys that were right under your nose.

it totally is
it is this and his fear of another RP/Brantley situation
i'm shocked he went to the wire with dre kirkpatrick last year to be honest
i think we're going to start mimicking this behavior and i think we already have this year

I think we can mimic this to a lesser degree. La has talent and little instate competition, but we still need to grab some NSD guys to compete for NCs, IMO. TX really has a stranglehold on the top TX talent, so they can really just sit back and relax during the latter stages of recruiting and STILL compete for NCs.

In Mack I trust.
Malcolm Williams,Brandon Collins and James Kirkendoll will do just fine at WR. Mack took those guys the same year TT came out. I don't think he was interested in Texas anyway. Not every kid in Texas grows up wanting to be a Longhorn.

Wrong, wrong.......
1) We lost to Bama this year.
2) Wasn't it Chad Jones who batted the sure TD (underthrow) early in this year's Peach Bowl?
3) TT's production < Chad Jones' production thus far.
I hope they both light it up this year. We will need them.

The staff felt Michael Ford and CM were the same type of players...skat/between the tackles type players. Kind of like a Keiland.
Pratt was the power back
Calhoun was the speed back.
Trent Richardson was just to good to say "No" to, so as long as he considered LSU he had a scholarship.
Thats it, nothing else to it.
When Ford committed LSU stopped putting the heat on CM.

Toliver was a 5* athlete, but not exactly a 5* receiver coming out of high school. he was rated on his potential and his crazy upside, but he was very, very raw.

Nope. A&M was his best offer. Only reason rantards got upset is the Rivals star rating which will all know is perfect.

Did you happen to catch his performance in the All-American game? He looked electric. Also, in the practices leading up to the game, his teammates were constantly praising him for his work ethic and his strength (he won an EAS National Award for his conditioning).
I think the most significant factor in his lack of offers was his consistent stance that he wanted to stay close to home. Furthermore, his senior year was limited due to the hurricane and I believe this limited college coach's evaluation of him.

did we show little/no interest so that we didn't scare off lache?
OR
did we just not want him even though he was on the LSU bandwagon?
LET'S SETTLE THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL

Which four or five star player have we signed lately that has lived up to star projection?
