Regional Attendance - what a difference

I was hoping to catch the San Diego State/Virginia game today featuring Stephen Strasburg but couldn't get away from work in time. The amazing thing is that I understand the game was not a sell out and I could have gotten a ticket at the last minute (something I was worried about) even though this game featured two solid programs and a pitcher many consider the best college pitcher in years.
I just looked for the attendance number and while I couldn't find it listed for the earlier SD State/VA game, I see that the later UC Irvine (no. 6 overall seed) game had an attendance of 3,002. Just up the freeway a bit, Cal State Fullerton (no. 2 seed overall) had attendance of 2,441. In comparison, the attendance number for the LSU game on Friday was 8,641 (paid tickets of 9,874 per another post).
Wow, what a difference a couple of thousand miles make. Way to go Tiger Fans!!

I also noticed on the interactive bracket that LSU's regional is the only one with regional sports coverage. There are 2 or 3 picked up by ESPNU, and another is on CSS. But BR gets its own TV deal.

Wonderful that LSU has its own little TV deal, while some other teams play before a national audience. Great if you live in the small coverage area, but tough if you are a TIGER fan and live outside the coverage area.

Besides, LSUsports.net is streaming the CST coverage.

I think that the announcers said in the SEC tourney last week that within our conference, baseball is now a revenue generating sport. May have been the NCAA as a whole, but they were talking to Slive. I could have misunderstood. But anyway, that's huge. I know schools like LSU, Ole Miss, Miss. State when not in a down year that's the case.

Just wondering how big he thinks the "national audience" is for these games. I'm willing to bet that if somebody's team isn't playing, there aren't many other people watching.

I will guarentee with the hills in right and left fields at Ole Miss that there were at least 12000 people watching Ole Miss last night.

I think I heard what you are talking about. I'm not knowledgeable on what is a 'revenue generating sport" and "what is an Olympic sport" but I assume those are the two ways a sport can be classified by the NCAA.
What the announcers said was that the NCAA now classifies baseball as a revenue generating sport. I don't know what type of benefits this comes with if any. I guess this means that programs around the country are starting to realize that baseball can bring in an audience if it is marketed correctly. (something Skip Bertman realized 20+ years ago)

Yeah, especially since the Irvine location is so forgiving for the traveling Virginian.
