Yea or nay? I was raised on this, but does it really do any good?

Probably not, but I do it anyway.

I usually add a little just because I think its fun... but the key is just to keep rinsing them in a tub or ice chest until the water runs clean.

Seriously what is the point of boiled crawfish?
Let's review:
1. It's mediocre tasting at best
2. The stench...good lord who would want to do that at their house
3. The amount of salt is just terrible for you
4. Seriously WTF is wrong with you people?

It just kills the Crawfish. I think everybos=dy was raised doing it that way, but for years, I just put em in clean water and rinse well a few times. A large ice chest with the drain open works well.

Can't really take the guy who thinks most La. food is overrated too seriously. Judging by most of your posts yesterday you definitely belong out there homey.

I have a friend who has a large ice chest that allows the hose to hook up to it. You just leave the ice chest cracked so the crawfish can't get out and let it the water flush out all the crap and dirt.

You're back home in Baton Rouge now...right?

I purge them, AFTER washing them and its very obvious that it works because of how dirty the water gets during the purge.

It doesn't help, but some people swear by it. I just buy purged crawfish, which means they've been in clean circulating water for at least 24 hours.

I thought the idea was to make them throw up.

I have to say I experimented with this after hearing that it did nothing.. I 'cleaned' the crawfish 3 times until the water was perfectly clear. Then I did one purge and I noticed the water was lightly brown again when draining. Now it could be that the salt causes friction that cleans the crawfish more when they are moving around or it could be they are actually throwing up as some believe but I did find that there was more dirt that it got off after doing a normal clean.

A myth. It takes up to two days to truly purge crawfish. Soaking too long in salt water will kill them.

It makes them crap, and yes it does work for home boiling. Who really has a day or two to purge the crawfish in just clean water except for the farmers and restaurants. If you rinse them down and then purge you can see how much crap comes out in the water. It also depends where you get your crawfish from. If its pond you definitely have to, if its from the basin not so much, because they are mostly caught on a sand bottom.

How do you know it's crap and not dirt?
