I see the literacy crisis up close as a librarian, and it’s more serious than many people realize. These aren’t lazy kids or kids who “don’t care.” Many are bright, funny, capable teenagers who have simply fallen behind and never caught back up. I meet teens every week who avoid reading because it’s frustrating, embarrassing, or exhausting for them. Some struggle to read a page fluently. Some cannot summarize what they just read. Some panic if asked to write more than a few sentences.

What the hell is going on with these teachers and parents in our schools?

Parents need to stop screen time and teach kids to read before they go to school.

Abolish Teacher's Unions.

Their purpose is not to operate or represent the best interests of the students or parents.

They exist to put the interests of the teachers above all others.

American Declinism was/is a strategy. Both a conscious and subconscious strategy of the Ruling Class. Every Institution in America over the last 60 years has pitched in to achieve the goal of a degraded culture-including the government schools which you likely work for. Tell ya what, shake it up a bit-start evangelizing for the classics-the traditional Western canon, -self-discipline-expectations-critical thinking-and watch it swing back. Crusade for Heather has two Mommies and multiculturalism and National Suicide and this is what you get. You degrade kids and you get degraded kids.

Mississippi has actually tackled this problem head on with incredible results. Google the Mississippi Miracle in reading and literacy.

An average black child in public school in Mississippi today reads at a higher level than black children in California, Minnesota, New York state, etc.

I don't claim to understand it. But it has something to do with bringing phonics back into the classroom. Apparently that works

It is amazing that Sesame Street was helping all of those years.

The reality is that Sesame Street did such a good job with phonics that the school systems started to remove it from curriculum.

And as tablet toddlers watched less traditional TV, they failed to get the basic instruction that the majority of Americans today grew up with. They weren't watching Sesame Street. And the school system wasn't filling the gap.

The USDOE is one of the worst government agencies ever developed. Most of the "changes" and "guidance" originates there and spreads across the country as evidenced based guidelines.

Most of our immigrants prior to the 1970s were European, many German with an average IQ north of 100. Post 1970 we are importing people from Central America, average IQ in the low to mid 90s. It’s not a mystery, plus the advent of the smart phone and lack of educational culture attributed some

Place schools on improvement plans if their literacy levels fall below thresholds.

Allow students to transfer out of schools on improvement plans.

I recommend you listen to the podcast "Sold a Story". It is good and goes into great detail with how we got here.

The standards had to be ridiculously lowered so all the kids coming in from the 3rd world can keep up.

Generational issue. Not at the student level but rather the teacher and parent level

We can start by deporting people who don't speak English.

It starts at home as do most other problems that plague our society.

everything in this country stops and starts with Parents. The movement of claiming children belong to the government and "it takes a village" has to be destroyed. Parents have to take responsibility for their children and take pride in parenting.

having said that, maybe teaching about the massive amounts of health and societal benefits from waiting until marriage for sex is the real first step. We have to reduce the number of pregnancies to people unfit for parenting and that should not mean promoting abortion.
