Landry and Engster talked about the soaring cost of college sports, with coaching buyouts costing tens of millions of dollars and the arms race to pay players. With many sports programs running big deficits, “there has to be some belt tightening,” Landry said.

He used the opportunity to bash former leaders at LSU like Scott Woodward, the former athletic director. Landry has publicly blasted Woodward for hiring football coach Brian Kelly to a mammoth contract that ended up requiring a buyout of more than $50 million.

The first belt tightening that we did was firing Scott Woodward, or having him leave,” he said. “Getting him out the kitchen certainly saved us a whole bunch of money.”

Landry said financial strain connected to name, image and likeness deals need attention.

“We really have to fix this NIL debacle,” Landry said. Without more guardrails, college football “will literally bankrupt” other sports programs, he said.

“I think that the LSU athletic program, from a coaching standpoint, has never been in a better position,” he said.

And he was unreserved in his praise of LSU football coach Lane Kiffin.

Landry praised U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, who is running to replace incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy.

“I said I wasn’t getting involved until the president got involved. The president decided that he wanted to back Congresswoman Letlow. I think he made a great choice,” Landry said.

Landry said Cassidy’s polling has been “dismal” due to his 2021 vote to convict President Donald Trump on impeachment charges.

He also criticized attack ads run by Cassidy and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming, another candidate in the Senate race.

Landry noted that that the two male candidates were relentlessly attacking the female candidate.

“They’re certainly not being Southernly
,” he said.

Reports surfaced this week that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund is considering pulling its support from LIV, placing the tour in question.

LIV Golf officials have not said that a tournament scheduled in New Orleans in June has been cancelled. But Landry in the interview suggested it could soon be, though he was quick to say the state would recoup financial incentives if the event didn’t pan out.

Landry said, “It is disappointing that … their issue came to an end. We didn’t lose $7 million. And I think that that’s extremely important.”

He noted that the roughly $2 million the state spent on City Park upgrades for the golf tournament was well worth it, and the state would keep $5 million it had planned to pay LIV.

I don't understand why a politician is so immersed in a college athletic department when there are seriously such other bigger issues at hand, especially in Louisiana...

It’s only worth posting an article about Landry if he says the words “I resign”. Preferably with words that apologize for what an awful governor he’s been.

Agreed but take a guess what college team most of his voting base cheers for?

Let’s start with the bashing of Kelly’s contract while Kiffin’s deal is virtually the same.

TBF, and only time will tell of course, but Kelly was half retired and checked out and was never going to stay the duration of that contract. Throw in him never winning the big meaningful games in his career and it was a dumb hire.

Kiffin is younger and has a much better track record of winning. He should at least be able to win more for the same cost and not run the program into the ground as a bonus.

College coaches aren't cheap so you have to spend the money if you want to compete. Kelly was never going to compete in the SEC.

I do think Landry has bigger fish to fry in this state and his priorities shouldn't be the coaches of LSU.

It’s easier to steal when most of your voter base is distracted by the football team.

You can't be serious. Kelly was a poor fit at LSU, but have you seen his winning percentage? He's consistently won everywhere except the last couple of seasons at LSU.

He’s not wrong about Woodward and you aren’t wrong about the Kiffin contract. I am stunned at the bad deals these jackasses make.

Not joking in the least that a seasoned used car salesman could better negotiate a coaching contract than these bunch of dummies.

Here’s a concept. You get a base salary that is nice but not outrageous. Winning season? Bonus check. Go to the Playoffs? Another bonus check. Win the Natty? Giant bonus check.

Losing season? No bonus. Suck it.

Two losing seasons? You are subject to being fired and you get six weeks pay on the way out the door.

It’s LSU. Not Bunkie High. People want to coach here because it provides the chance to win. They need to quit acting as if the job candidate carries all the power.

Uh, NO, terrible choice by Trump. She would have never won had her husband not died while running for the office. Fleming by a mile. If it is her and Cassidy, yes, he has to go, but she's a typical establishment Repuke.

Not what you think despite him being a USL alum. More people from Lafayette attend LSU games than the Cajuns have at their home games.
