Breaking now. MLB team valuations keep going through the roof
quote:
The San Diego Padres are nearing a deal to be sold to private-equity billionaire José E. Feliciano and his wife Kwanza Jones, according to people familiar with the matter.
The deal values the Padres at around $3.9 billion—the highest valuation ever achieved by a Major League Baseball team, the people said.

Are they going to play “Feliz Navidad” after every home run now?

Pretty low. That would be 25th in the NBA but is 6th in MLB.
Also another example of how wrong those Sportico/Forbes estimates are because Forbes in June 2025 listed the Padres at $1.95B.

Forbes is now including it in the updated March 2026 valuations, which has the Padres at $3.1b
Pro sports franchises are the definition of scarcity assets. A team’s intrinsic valuation (which is what such estimates are for) and the same team’s valuation if they are the only one (or one of very few) entertaining a sale are not the same. Sale prices will always exceed valuation estimates, and $3.9b represents a pretty reasonable premium following a competitive sale process

1974 doesn't seem so crazy long ago....but Steinbrenner's $9 million purchase price of the Yankees seems eons ago...like he bought them during Roman times.

Forbes is looking too much at numbers and undervaluing the scarcity built into every sale (not many franchises hit the open market)

Best stadium in the MLB would be hilarious if they tried to move them
