Awesome!!! The lawyers get millions and I get a nearly unredeamable voucher for some out of the way venue.

I would take something like 10% back on all of the tickets I bought and be happy with that. frick those slimy cocksuckers.

Owning the ticketing and venues and forcing all the major acts to sell their tickets through them to access the venues definitely reeks of monopoly like behavior.

however, with regard to ticket prices, dollar amount of fees, etc...that blame is shared by both livenation and the artists. if the artists actually wanted lower "all in" prices, they would be lower. but they aren't, because it is easier to convince the ticket buying public that livenation is the bad guy. and the reason that the artists dont want lower prices is that ticket revenue, merchandise, etc is the only way they make any money

You forgot also having their hand in the resale market cookie jar.

Doesn't sound like a bad motive by the artist.

It’s double predatory. I don’t care about getting $4 back from this suit but breaking up this bullshite company and creating real competition sounds like a great outcome.

quote:it isnt a bad motive, its reality. bands make fractions of cents per download when they used to make 5 or 6 bucks for every record sold. it is impossible to make a real living playing music if you don't sell concert tickets, and maximize the revenue from those tickets.
Doesn't sound like a bad motive by the artist.
the other thing is, we would not have such a successful live music industry without a monopoly like livenation. venues have to be built and managed, tickets (all online now) have to be inventoried and sold, tours have to be arranged, artists have to be paid, etc etc etc. its a gigantic undertaking and livenation has made it seamless to the end user (you and me).
finally, livenation does have competitors...AXS, tixr, etc. they do not own every venue. they do not contract with every artist. there are options available to many venues and artists. as with anything this complicated, there are layers to it above and beyond "frick ticketmaster"

I have a pretty novel idea. Let the venues sell directly to the public.

Back in the day...
People would camp out in the parking lot where tickets were sold the night before they went on sale. If you were close to the front of the line, you could buy eight tickets for around $120.00 or so.
Those eight tickets would be on the floor. Center stage in the first 10 rows.
I really miss those days. Good times!
Live Nation sucks balls. They triple billed me for Van Halen. Was Hell getting my money back from them.

quote:
Last year, Smith hit out at Ticketmaster after The Cure fans reported huge fees that doubled prices to see the English rock band on their Lost World tour. The singer eventually managed to negotiate a partial refund for customers. “It was easy to set ticket prices, but you need to be pig-headed. We didn’t allow dynamic pricing because it’s a scam that would disappear if every artist said, ‘I don’t want that!’ But most artists hide behind management. ‘Oh, we didn’t know,’ they say. They all know. If they say they do not, they’re either f***ing stupid or lying. It’s just driven by greed.”

Phish has to use Live Nation because they control the large venues they play at. Phish would prefer the old way of mail order. But they can't do that anymore because of the monopoly Live Nation set up.

so?
the dead did mail order all thru the 80s and 90s and guess what? It was a gigantic pain in the arse. You had to mail in fricking money orders (LOL) for the number of tickets you wanted and if you got chosen they assigned seats (if not all GA show) at random…and if you didn’t get chosen they mailed you the money orders back and you had to go deposit them.
now, you get on the site at the release date, choose your seats, check out and immediately get your tickets. And if you want to sell or transfer them, that is a click away.
I’m not going to speak for anyone but me, but I think I’ll stick with what we have now

But now we don't get the Doniac Schvice.

from the tongue to the schvice

Touring is really expensive these days, even for small productions. Van/bus rental and fuel alone will take up a large chunk of your ticket sales. :Live Nation is taking 40% of merch now at some venues too. That's why tshirts cost $35 and hoodies are $100.

But seriously, screw them. This is great news.
