Louisiana amendment 4 business inventory property taxes

This is about the 5th version of this property tax on inventory. The LABI has their hands all over this. In general I support lower taxes. But we base our budgets on property tax generation, then we give businesses abatements. This is also another example of "our" legislators doing more for their lobbyists than they do for local communities. What's everyone's opinion?
Proposed Amendment 4: Property Tax Exemption for Business Inventory
What This Amendment Does
This amendment allows local parishes, if they decide, to reduce or eliminate property taxes on business inventory.
What a YES Vote Means
Allow local tax cuts for businesses
Businesses may pay lower or no taxes
Parishes can lower or eliminate business inventory taxes
State provides a one-time payment to offset losses
What a NO Vote Means
Keep existing funding for schools and local services stable.
Business inventory continues to be taxed as it is today
Local governments and schools maintain a consistent funding stream

A tax on business inventory is BS straight up theft. Vote YES.

Why should business inventory be taxed?
Posted on 4/15/26 at 7:36 am to Gee Grenouille
It’s insane that businesses in this state have to pay a yearly tax on their inventory.

Remember when gambling was going to pay for all the schools and roads.

If you are a business owner you already pay property taxes. You also pay sales tax on all the stuff you buy. And you collect sales tax for the stuff you sell.
So let's tax it again.
So let's tax it again.

I agree. When the business sells its inventory, and makes a profit, the profit is taxed as income. Taxing inventory is an odd way to favor businesses which don’t hold much inventory and to divert federal income taxes to local property taxes. (Paying inventory taxes reduces income and thus federal income taxes?)

Inventory taxes are such bullshite and shouldn't exist
This isn't about lobbyists as this hurts small businesses more than a business that can afford to pay lobbyists so your premise is stupid

The weird part is that isn't 100% the case. You are exempt on items you buy to resell, so why is it taxed at the EoY? You get punished if you don't sell it on time.
You also get a tax break/depreciation on buying machines/fixtures for your business from the Fed but have to turn around and pay the state yearly for them. You never truly own it. Only rent it from the state.

The entire concept is retarded.

Tax revenue has to come from somewhere so you have to decide what you want it from. Inventory tax is a bad business/jobs tax if your neighbors dont have it. I dont give a damn if South Dakota does not have it but if TX, MS, AL dont have it that is a problem for LA.
If you want better business enviroment then get rid of it but figure out where the income will be replaced or spending eliminated.

LABI does not support the inventory tax.

That inventory tax served as nothing but a massive boon to warehousing and trucking companies in Mississippi and Texas. It is long overdue for repeal.

Have you ever needed to get something fixed and had to wait a couple of days for a part to come in? Repair places don't keep large amounts in stock partly due to inventory being subject to property taxes. And it's not just the amount of inventory at the end of the year. It's based on the average at the end of every month.

Literally every southern state is booming with manufacturing and warehouses and Louisiana has jack shite because of the stupid Inventory tax.

Let me tell you about Jefferson Parish and having to have a permit for a dumpster

Which is why they keep changing the language in this amendment and shipping it back to us to vote on it. The voters have decided this multiple times over, they don't want it eliminated.
