Has Rory gotten himself into the Top 10 Golfers of all time?

I believe in terms of majors, he is sitting somewhere around 12th or 13th all time?
Obviously you have guys like Nicklaus, Tiger, Hogan, Player, Jones, Palmer etc all firmly ahead of him.
But has he broken into the bottom half of the top 10 now? What would he need to do to get there?

He did last year. Only 6 golfers have all 4 majors. He is one of them. That holds more weight than simply total number of majors

Yes he is 1 of 6 to win the Career Grand Slam. 1 of 15 that have won 6+ majors.
Some people might act like PGA wins matter too but Majors are the big factor

Something like that, Wikipedia says he's in a 4 way tie for 12th with Trevino, Faldo, and Mickelson. None of the others are part of the 6 to have a career grand slam, and that probably bumps him at least into the top 10.
Tiger, Jack, Hogan, Player, Sarazen, and McIlroy are the only ones to have done that.

It's a bit unfair to the guys that came around before these 4 majors were established. Bobby Jones won the 4 major tournaments of his time in the same year; Open, Amateur, US Open, US Am.

Add 3 FedEx Cups and 2 Players. He's up there.

I am not an avid golf fan and realize different courses play differently etc. but why would someone having 8 majors but no Masters wins be less ranked all time than someone who has 4 majors but 1 of each? I know my example is a bit extreme as it's 2X the total majors but at some point majors matter overall more I would think and that is the point of being extreme

It shows that the player can win in a variety of ways since the 4 majors are all quite different. Also, there are varying levels of prestige. I think arguments could be made for the Masters, Open, or the US Open as being the most important, but all would agree that the PGA is the least important.
I think an interesting question to pro golfers would be if they want to win 3 PGA Championships (and only those) in their career or 1 Masters.

this alone would put him outside the top 10. The grand slam is awesome but if a guy won only 4 majors and just happened to win the grand slam wouldn't make him top 10 would it?

Talent wise he absolutely is. Metric wise he is probably 8-12. 2 more majors it isn't even a question. Hell he might win 2 more Masters.
A lot of people including me figured he would go on a tear after winning one and be really competitive in the other majors last year. He wasn't.
PGA - T47
US Open - T19
British - T7
Maybe the 2nd Masters lights a spark and he goes on a Phil type run in his late 30s.

I'd guess 9/10 choose Masters.

Last year's Masters put him above Mickelson for me. Rory easily could've folded like Mickelson did at the 2006 US Open, but he came through in the playoff.

But he gets knocked down a few pegs for allowing Junnah to come back and beat him like that
But seriously, Bobby Jones may not be the best example as he has 0 PGA wins from 1923-1930, but Hagen has 5 from 1914-1929 (all 5 won between 1921-1927). Which means he missed 1 of the major tournaments during his playing time. But does someone like Hagan have a grand slam claim as the Masters started about 5 years after he stopped playing (assuming he won the other major tournament during his time)

I think an important thing to note is how deep golf is now with talent. It's a lot harder to rack up a ton of career wins than it was 30-40-50-60 years ago.
Rory having 6 majors, a career grand slam, 3 Fedex Cup wins, 2 Players Championships, and being 16th overall in wins - in the modern golf competitive landscape, is top 10 all time. His quality of wins (meaning prestige/difficulty of tournament) is extremely high.

So if you have 5 Masters, 1 Open and 1 US Open but no PGA, would you be ranked higher than someone with 5 total majors but has won all four?
Obviously it's a subjective ranking but I would think, like Tennis, a major is a major. Obviously slams matter but major wins are what they show most often on the leaderboards

If he was a significant number of wins outside of the top 10, simply having grand slam may not be enough to have him considered a top 10 golfer all-time. But he is only 1 major from a 5-way tie for 7-11 (1 of those is another grand slam holder).
By this argument, that would put Sarazen at 7th all-time (7 majors with a grand slam), then you have Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer at 8-11 with 7 majors each. And Rory sitting at 12th with 6 majors and a grand slam?

I think any tennis player or golfer would be lying if they said they would rather 8 total majors but missing one of the 4 versus only having 4 majors but you won all of them
As a competitor knowing you went your entire career without winning that tournament is just a massive miss. A massive hole

my point is i don't think winning the grand slam makes you automatic top 10 or 5 since he is the 4th one to do so. I think it is hard to compare eras. How many guys actually played all 4 majors back in the day? How many tournaments were there 60 yrs ago? He will end up top 10 and may even be right now but IDK who is in the top 10 enough to decide.
