I would think soccer and F1 would take up most of the top 5 just because of the global reach of those sports.

C. Ronaldo probably up there too.

And believe it or not but Serena Williams is a monster in terms of global presence as well.

Also have to consider LeBron and Usain Bolt.

Is this all time?

If it’s truly “ worldwide” it’s probably 4 soccer players and some Indian dude who plays cricket.

I’d imagine the real current list in no order is:

Messi
Ronaldo
Lebron

Then it gets hairy probably another soccer player
Neymar

And maybe a tennis guy

I thought about F1 but I still think others mentioned here are a tick above.

But it does have a huge following, you are right.

The most famous athletes of all time, driven by global recognition, commercial success, and unparalleled performance, are often cited as Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi. These icons transcended their respective sports—basketball, boxing, and soccer—to become household names worldwide.

The people who grew up watching Ali and Pele are dying off. Not that the name doesn't ring a bell but what percentage of today's global population actually watched them in action versus someone like Messi or Lewis Hamilton?

Pele
Maybe 25 years ago. Probably doesn't crack the top 5 for soccer player popularity now

In no particular order, these are probably the guys you would need to pick from. I have no real idea how to quantify that.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Lionel Messi
LeBron James
Virat Kohli (cricket)
Tiger Woods
Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior
Michael Jordan
Muhammad Ali
Pelé
Roger Federer
Kylian Mbappé

If you forced me to pick 3 I would probably go with the following:

Cristiano Ronaldo
Lionel Messi
LeBron James
Tiger Woods
Michael Jordan

That’s a good list.

Some others that could be on the list that come to mind are Roger Federer and Michael Schumacher.

Just with the Chinese numbers alone Yao Ming has to be up there. If a billion people know who you are.
