Looking to play a semi-nice public course within 30-40 minutes from Baton Rouge. I know there aren’t a ton of great options, how does The Island compare to other options like Beaver Creek and a Copper Mill, each of which I’ve played dozens of times, but I’ve never played The Island.

Is there another nicer public course within 30-40 mins from Baton Rouge I should play instead (I’m not playing Greystone FYI).

Great layout, challenging design. Haven't played it recently to know how the greens are right now, but it's a great course. Just wish it was easier to access or I didn't have to deal with the bridge.

Story

I’ve played it a bunch and the guys I’m playing with love golf but aren’t very good and I know they would hate the layout.

The Island isn’t an easy golf course. Holes 2, 10-12 are tough. They are offset by some easier and shorter holes. It has a good practice facility and is priced fairly and usually in decent shape. Good food and cold beer afterwards. Just time it to be across the bridge no later than 3:00 during the week.

Hole 2 maybe the most challenging golf hole I have ever played. I would actually like to see 50 pros play it in a tournament from the tips and see the scoring average

Like others have said, I love the course, just a pain to get to early in the morning from this side of the bridge.

Thanks for the replies, seems like I’ll probably give it a go.

Would you say it is in better condition than a course like Cooper Mill or Beaver Creek? These guys won’t care too much about difficulty but things like smooth greens, good practice facilities, well manicured fairways, and a nice clubhouse will make an impression

The Island is a fantastic course. Good range, nice folks, great course layout, beer girls... I've never eaten there, so I can't comment on that. Compared to Copper? I'd put the course very close to equal, but the lack of a range at Copper tips the scales to The Island. Copper's location is better for me, even though they take around the same amount of time to get to.

In addition to 2 and 10-12, hole 18 is no cakewalk either.

100% yes. It also drains extremely well, for future reference.

Overall a great track. Great people! Grass conditions were solid when I played there two weeks ago. Greens were slick. Rolled better than their appearance.

There are certainly some really tough holes there that are just fun to play. 2, 6, 10, 11, 12 are quite demanding.

Practice facilities are great too!

Give it a go!

#2 is not to bad to me(short hitter so laying up is always my option). But when I'm teeing off #5, I'm already thinking about 10 thru 12 and how bad it's gonna be. ??

Beaver Creek is the standard of very good public golf conditions so it's hard to put anyone up against them and say they're better than beaver. The Island is a better money value for public golf around BR. Course conditions are fine at the Island. They did just solid tine greens Monday.

Then holes 2,6,10,11,& 18 will be unpleasant for them..

The Island is a great choice.. Greens were just punched but ok..

I don’t think it would be a big struggle. I played in the club championship with a long hitter there and he hit driver, 5-iron I think.

I’ve made more triples on it than birdies, maybe even pars, but I’m too stuborn to play it intelligently.

Agreed. Very tough hole for amateurs, but topping out at 540, the pros would take 3 wood, 4 iron or something and be on or near the green for a likely birdie far more often than not (as long as they don't miss left on the approach).

They'd struggle more with hole 11 with the tight landing area and undulated green.

Its 540 from the tips

Being able to go driver 5 iron onto that peanut sized raised green is straight up nutting all over the course

Just looking at it gives me nightmares

You just gave me an idea for this hole now.

To play it smart:

3W instead of driver off tee
Gap wedge layup
6 iron to green or 8 iron layup
Putt or chip

Par/bogey strategy.

I’ve tried that but that layup over that water into the landing area is awkward as hell. It’s very Pete Dyish with the angle. I always push fade it too far right
