40 minutes of hell rarely exists in the game today

There have been some pressing teams the last 10-15 years….VCU, vols when pearl was there with lofton and Wayne chism and company would routinely steal the ball off in bounds presses and lay the ball in the basket, obviously pitino teams. Maybe a few others here and there but the trapping and all that just doesn’t really exist cause I dount rich players want to do it. However I believe that is a factor for my duke didn’t handle the situation very well. I think st John’s achieves what they achieve because of the huge advantage of having a team that will press (of course duke just played them so I guess they were more prepared then they would have been). A great full court press is fun to watch

Ofenses push the tempo far to strongly for 40 minutes of heck to be efective in todays basketball culture. Live by the 3 die by the 3 is the new mantra in lockers rooms across the globe. Say goodbye to the old way of playing round ball, the new “shooters shoot”, way of playing round ball is here to proverbialy stay

The new 40 minutes of hell was having to watch MM coach. Thankfully Verge has saved LSU from 40 mins of hell

Not really...
Because you have to field a team of poorly coached boneheads to not break it.
And once you easily break it, that team gets an easy bucket the other way with a layup or jacking a wide open 3. 40 minutes of watching that? Might as well pull up a seat at the no defense playground because with today's game a press quickly turns into no defense in reality.

I get nostalgic for the old Loyola Marymount teams ant the 40 minutes of up and down and the fast pace. The 125 -115 games they would regularly have were fun to watch with Hank Gathers, Bo Kimble and Per Stearmer. They could press, they would force you to press. Long passes, Gathers dunking on you , Shearer pulling up for the three unexpectedly.
Entertaining

People today would say “unethical hoops” and yearn for rock fights of yesteryear.

Texas Tech pressed in 2018-19. That was an all-time defense.
North Carolina A&T started pressing Hampton at the end of the NBA HBCU Classic, and got the win because of it. Hampton wasn't ready for that pressure.
But if you're trying to make a general point about Duke based on that last turnover, I disagree. UConn played that in a way a team would not in other circumstances. They left two guys wide open down the floor, and risked everything on getting that steal. And it only worked because Cayden even attempted the pass, and he didn't need to. A timeout by Scheyer before inbounding the ball probably prevents that turnover.

How could you forget the most famous pressing team in Bob Huggins Press Virginia?? Those mountaineer teams pressed full court the whole game. The 2016/2017 team created 21 turnovers a game. That was one of the most ever by a power conference.

Bucky Ball had success with a variation of it this season. They don’t really play good D but their press exposed poor teams and wore down a couple others with numbers and attrition. Getting to the dance with that roster by pressing proved it still works.

I bet it could still work below the elite levels
